What can I do to gain experience while getting my prerequistes for nursing?

I'm a senior in high school and when I graduate I want to do somthing in health care that will take at least a year of education while i'm in college taking prenursing classes.

When I was in school I worked as a pharmacy technician, and then worked as an operating room technician, while in nursing prerequisites and nursing school. I knew many others who worked as unit clerks. Several worked as attendents or transporters, moving patients around hospitals. There are several entry level positions you can get while you are doing your prerequisites.

If you speak with the human resources personnel at a major hospital in your area, they will often, not only give you developmental positions, but also, tuition assistance, and a position of choice guarantee when you graduate.

Certified Nursing Assistant at a nursing home.

Apply to a hospital admitting patients. I did that while I was in college. People are admitted 24 hours/7days week so it worked around my school schedule. Also look into ekg tech or house keeping. You will learn a lot about working in health care and being in a hospital. I spent a lot of time in er admitting people so I saw a lot and knew I could handle all the blood and guts. The gift shop is another option.

While I was in nursing school, I worked as a CNA on the weekend night shifts, and on weekday afternoons, I worked in the hospital lab, typed policy and procedure manuals for the lab and nursing administration, and drove a route picking up lab work and delivering lab results to hospitals, health departments, and doctors' offices. (I did not do all of these at the same time)
While my daughter was in nursing school, she worked as a pharmacy tech, at an assisted living home, as a CNA in an Alzheimer's unit, and in claims dept. for a major health insurance company.
All of these are great experience that you will be able to draw from once you begin your nursing practice.
