If your a nurse practitioner and want to become a doctor, how much more education do you need?

4-5 years?

If you want to go to med school, you would have 4 years plus any extra training you do after that.
Alternately, you could get a doctorate of nursing practice (DNP), although that will have slightly different responsibilities than an M.D. These programs will probably be 1 1/2 - 3 years for someone who is already a nurse practitioner.

You have to go to med school and start out like everybody else. It does not give you a headstart timewise. It would probably just make it easier for you than for the others due to the prior training and experience. But it would not be a financial or reasonable preplanned way to be a doctor.

Despite the master's degree, a nurse practitioner may possibly not even have all the prerequisite college courses to apply for medical school. It could easily take an extra year of college courses in addition to the four years in medical school plus the residency to follow.
