Are there programs or organizations out there that assist disabled people in gaining an education 2 work? |
im currently on ssi disability and i have 2 kids one i receive afdc welfare and the other child support. problem is this isn't enough income to care 4 me and my children. i want to go to a vocational school that is about to be built in my city of victorville california. i'd like to gain the skills of an lvn licensed vocational nurse then began working. but i at times not all the time have extreme difficulties with remebering even the simpliest things i have problems with communication and expressing myself or finding the right words to say. i even sometimes become confused with verbal directions or written ones. i feel really stupid sometimes and going to school and working is scarey to me but i need more income. i fear that if i went to school or worked as a nurse my disability will be noticed and i'd be ridiculed. in elementary school i was in special education and was told i had a reading comprehension problem. are there any programs or organizations that will assist low-income single mothers with childcare or will pay for the cost of the vocational program of the persons intrest? something like a rehabilative program like calworks that assist welfare recipients with getting off welfare and getting a job. i receive afdc welfare for my son but don't qualify for calworks becuz im on ssi. any advice, suggestions or comments? thanx in advance. As an LPN(same as an LVN) and a physically disabled person, this career doesn't seem to be for you.First of all,the schooling itself is very difficult and in order to get your license you must pass an exam given by the state. As a nurse, you have many things on your plate at the same time and have peoples lives relying on you. When I worked at the local nursing home,I was in charge of the floor and had the responsibility of caring for 60 residents. It is a very difficult job both physically and mentally. Check out your state vocational rehabilitation agency. Counselors experienced in working with individuals with disabilities are available to assess your skills & abilites & to help you with a vocational plan. Since you are on SSI you should be eligible for services thru the VR agency. http://www.rehab.cahwnet.gov/ Or here is a phone number to a central office. (916) 263-8981 Call & tell them you would like to apply for services. My brother in law is disabled and is on ssi. He received help with his college expenses through a program called voc rehab. I found this website for voc rehab in California. It is for Los Angeles county, but if you are not in that area they should be able to direct you to where you need to go. |
