What Nursing Certification Do I Need?

What kind of certification do I need to get to become a nurse? (I am talking about short time not a college education). What are the job opportunities? It is possible to get a 3rd shift job with that certification?

You have 2 basic certifications......LPN, or Licensed Practical Nurse (in some states it's called LVN, Licensed Vocational Nurse), or RN, which is Registered Nurse. I would recommend you go for your RN, in which there are a multitude of job opportunities and areas in which you can specialize in a specific area......as in Nurse Anesthesist......where you work in surgery putting people to sleep with medication and/or gases. RN pays alot more than LPN, and no matter which certification you go for, there are always openings on the 3rd shift, or what many nurses call the "graveyard" shift. Also, if you do get your RN, and go for a specific specialty, you'll even get more money. Best of luck to you.

Short term would be LPN and if you do not want college then becoming an RN is out. An RN is a minimum 2 year degree and some states are trying to make it a 4 year degree. However in many areas hospitals are turning away from LPNs and going with more RN's. I am a RN in NY and thats what is going on here. Most LPN certification courses are at least one year.
