I am a student nurse who is passionate about sex education. I'd like to volunteer my time to educate teens.

I am Australian, most of the girls from my graduating year at high school are mothers already twice or have had abortions (i am only 21). I feel that it is important for teens to know about contraception and all that other stuff. I would like to volunteer my time at the local high schools so i can maybe get through to some of these misinformed and confused teens, but i don't no where to start any help would be much appreciated, cheers!!

Try contacting SHine SA. According to their web site, they are th lead sexual health agency in South Australia.

Here's a contact that may be useful:

Professional Education & Resources Team
Address: 64c Woodville Road, Woodville SA 5011
Tel: (08) 8300 5317
Fax: (08) 8300 5399
Email: SHineSACourses@health.sa.gov.au

There's also a school curriculum called SHARE (Sexual Health and Relationships Education) that they be implemented in about fifteen schools which may be of interest to you.

There's also a lot of great information on their web site:

http://www.shinesa.org.au

I hope this helps!

This is a commendable idea. I don't recommend the Girl Scouts for volunteering with this as a friend ran into trouble providing her girl scout troop with such info. Maybe their attitude has changed since the 1980s though.
Is there a Planned Parenthood near you (not sure about in Australia)? They may offer volunteer opportunities to educate teens.
The other option might be to set up a website with links to sex education sites. Make it appealing to teens.

You can try and get a job at your local high school. They should have a sex ed class there.

I live in the US but my husband taught sex-ed for the state in the schools. You need permission slips and the parents get hysterical about this subject. It is a subject fraught with pit-falls and you could get into a lot of trouble. I will just assume parents in Australia aren't much different. The Christians are the ones...

The problem is two-fold: presenting an approach that the kids will accept and presenting a program that the parents will agree to.

Kids have this nasty tendency to feel they are smarter than anyone else, so the arrogance of "this won't happen to me" is tough to overcome.

Parents distrust sex-ed classes, for tehy feel that their values are not represented (and they always feel the class is about technique, rather than information).

You also have to face the fact that a woman's place is society is tightly defined. As long as a woman is an "easy Sheila", you will have a very tough sell on this indeed.
