Why do most of the indians choose medical line or engineering ?

i'm a student in england. basically from india...... to my knowledge most of the indians are either doctor, nurses or enigneers! but why! are they not aware of other courses , or is it jusr too easy to get into those courses. british students get good education from the basic yet ...they dont succeed well!

Students think that if they study medicine or Engineering, They get good job and future to lead a peacefull life. It doesn't mean they are not choosing for other course. They feel they are safe in it. So they go for it. Parents too check now and then with the kids education daily. It is not so easy to get into the courses. Do you know how many parents are standing in Queue to get admission for medical and engineering? It is not so easy to get admission first. After admission, Parent think some how they should earn money and make their kids to finish their studies. I know it is also happening their to you also. I feel life is india is tough for middle class. It's not easy.

ughhh here we go again, why do most blacks play sports, why do most hispanics do constuction and why are whites have jobs that about technology???????????????

Do you get free school for being a minority or exchange student? Some teenagers fear going into hundreds of thousands in debt. If someone paid for me to go to Med school, I would give it a shot.

earnings and opportunism are large and world wide!

Indians study for job and we can't afford to study for innovation or pleasure of knowledge. If snake charmers get paid more than engineers or doctors then every one will go for it.

It's what we're good at. And at least it pays well. And not ALL indians follow in that same job carrers

It's a cultural thing (pressure from parents)...but that's changing in a big way now. And that's a good thing.

These are considered to be viable choices. Sometimes, kids are conditioned by their parents, they don't choose what they want, they choose what they are told they should want. What the parents want for their children is for them to be well settled, have a secure life - financially and emotionally. And to be honest, arranged marriages are prevalent here, in India, and more often than not, the engineers and doctors are given much more preference. Also, the financial aspect needs to be taken into consideration. Being a doctor or an engineer, is no mean task, but the pay is amazing, to say the least, as compared to a psychologist's. All these factors play a pretty important role while making a career choice. However, I still find it hard to believe that all these people really dream of being doctors and engineers, a Dali, or a Page may be hidden somewhere, but, thwarted, which is disheartening

probably it is their culture. like they are brought up to think that the most respectable job is a doctor.

Im european and was brought up to believe, an architect is more esteemed than a teacher, a lawyer is more esteemed than an architect but a doctor holds the more esteem.
if u are going for a university degree dont do something like social work, or public administrator , become a doctor. and doctors arent paid very well here!!

Doctors and Engineers fetch good price in marriage market.

Back in the times on Raj, Indians were groomed for serving the British administrative machinery. But after Independence, Nehru started nation building by making Dams, canals etc. There was a need for engineers. Indira Gandhi closed the door of the economy for foreign companies. So the potential to earn money was from abroad and mainly from a technical job.
Economic libralisation in the early 90s again bought new oppertunities. All these are the factors that we Indian's (who are generally not Business oriented) consider a technical education to be a "secure" otion.
Similarly for Doctors oppertunities abroad are tempting.

Is the fact that students think other lines liks commerce does not provide them a bright future.But now-a-days this situation is fully changed well.They think that only engneering and medicinal are the high level lines and applying for that..
But todays students likes commerece the most..

because; all indians have a dream to get a high job . in the childhood tiome all parents inspire thier children;s to go to school .

Because they are more paying and very respectable professionsand do not include much of a hassel when one is working but now a days many people have and are opting for IT industry , which too is highly paying. These professions also include something new everyday , where as professions like teachers/professors / tailors etc are less paying , are monotnous and do not have so much of competetion.
