I can not decide between the following careers, education/counselling, adult nursing and vet nursing...help!? |
I am in the process of applying for courses as I am changing career from IT to something caring. I have experience of working in education and liked it, I also have done many years of first aid. I really like animals too though and have done work experience as a vet nurse. At 33 I am anxious to get it right how do I know which of these things to go for? I keep worrying that I have made the wrong choice each time I choose something. Should I apply for all the courses and see from there what would help me to decide? Has anyone else been in this position? I know the position has to be caring and meaningful as that has been missing from my work for ages. I currently work in a Vet. College, on the maintenance side. Wonderful place to work, everyone so caring, courteous, polite, thoughtful...great. Somewhat 'in the open' not an office job ..as a nurse. The Small Animal Hospital has all the surgery, operating theatres, x ray, Cat scan, MRI, Intensive Care (so lovely to see the ITU nurses sitting in say a dog kennel cradling a dog as it recovers) then, phisiotherapy, and, finally they leave.... fit and well.....What else can I say. You will get a heap of abuse in all those jobs other than Vet nursing... do that the best careers have the most options Nursing sounds like a good bet. There are so many specialities, and you can literally take your pick once you've done your basic training. In your position I'd try to get some voluntary work in in each of the areas. This will give you a chance to see if you like it, and will allow you to talk, in depth, to the relevant people. you'll have a busy few months, but it should help. It will also help the application process. Depending on what you do education pays more. Which is a shame but that's just the reality. I stayed at home for many years to look after my chidren. I had the very same problem when I decided to go back to work again. I couldn't decide either. I found job shadowing very helpful and was surprised how many organisations were willing to allow me to do a days work for free, to see if it was what I really wanted. In the meantime apply for the courses, but weigh up the pros and cons. Travelling expenses, cost of courses. (Some may be oversubscribed and may not be available) That way you stand a good chance of getting into the one you want. |
