Setting the standards for nursing education in Alberta

One of the key responsibilities of a self-regulated profession is the review and approval of basic educational programs leading to entry to the profession.

In Alberta, the Nursing Education Program Approval Board (NEPAB) was established in May 1999 following an agreement between the Universities Co-ordinating Council (UCC) and the AARN. The UCC functions outlined in Sections 54 and 55 of the Nursing Profession Act delegate NEPAB to:

* make rules prescribing the minimum standards required to acquire and retain the designation "approved school of nursing"

* make rules respecting any matters that are required to secure an effective program of study in nursing

* grant to and withdraw from a school of nursing the designation "approved school of nursing"
