Should I be concerned with headaches lasting all day everyday?

Ok, so a little background information:
When I was in the 9th grade I was playing a game in the pool with some of my cousins at a hotel. I stepped out of the pool, took a left, took roughly around two steps and slipped. I "flew" around a foot in the air and landed on my right side. My head hit first, then my wrist followed by my hip and the rest of my right side. As I hit my head, I literally felt my brain bounce back and forth in my skull. Luckily, my aunt was a nurse and checked out my head. She noticed I had a a large lump on the right side of my head. A few days later I went to have an MRI done and they said they didn't see anything. It's been five years since then and I've had headaches ranging from a little more than moderate to severe 24/7.

Did you notice that the onset of the headaches is directly correlated to the trauma? If so, you could have something called chronic post-traumatic headache (CPTH). The severity of the headaches don't necessarily correspond to the severity of the trauma, and it is often the more mild head traumas that lead to CPTH.

The mechanisms of CPTH are not fully understood. It has been speculated that CPTH may be due to 鈥渃entral sensitization鈥?resulting from persistent peripheral input from injured tissues.

CPTH can be treated acutely with simple prescription pain meds, or chronically with medication that is used to treat migaines.

I think your symptoms warrant a trip to the neurologist, particularly since the headaches are so severe and not going away. They need to rule out other causes of the headache such as migraines or hemorrhage.

I would see your family doctor and ask for a referal to a neurologist. It may be nothing, something simple (like maybe bad eyes), or something serious. You want to find out what is going on as soon as possible.
