Do you HAVE to insert NuvaRing while on your period?

In the packet information is says to start on day 1 of your cycle (1st day of bleeding) or days 2-5. So can I not just start it right now even though my period hasn't started yet? There's no info on how to just start it right away in the packet yet I seem to remember the nurse practicioner telling me I could. But I don't know if I should go by what the nurse said or the packet...please help!

The reason why they recommend to start it during your period is so that you won't have to worry about using another form of birth control for the first 7 days you're on the ring. It also disrupts your cycle less than if you start it randomly. My doctor told me that I could start it as soon as I knew I wasn't pregnant, which is why I waited until my period to start the ring. It might be a good idea to wait, just to make sure you're not pregnant (if you've been sexually active) and also to not disrupt your cycle.

Follow the package directions. Leave it in for exactly 3 weeks, then leave it out for 7 days and reinsert on the 7th....any other questions, go to www.nuvaring.com for answers.

Go by what your nurse told you, and if you are not sure exactly what they said call the nurse practioner
