Does a blood glucose of 158 and 174 mean diabetes for a 7 yr old?

He is almost 8 and has always been a really thirsty kid and otherwise healthy. I did the meter readings after lunch and got 174, then again several hours later and got the 158. According to what I read, that is too high, especially for a kid. Lately I have noticed him being rather touchy or emotional and for about 4 or 5 days he says his tummy doesn't feel right, not a hurt, just not right. I am going to do a fasting glucose on him in the am b4 breakfast. I will definately be calling the Dr. on Monday either way. As a Mom and daughter of a nurse, I am really worried for him.
I am open to information and advice, as I have been trying to find all that I can on the net, but most of it is for after you have a diagnosis.

This morning the fasting is 120. I am using a One Touch Ultra with a brand new battery.

go see Dr that is high

I am an adult diabetic and my levels are supposed to be 90 to 130. Defiantly get the kid to a doctor ASAP!

I would say with his excessive thirst and those readings there is a good chance he is diabetic. He definitely needs to be checked regularly. Lots of children are diabetic. If it gets real high there isn't much you can do except go to the ER, but if it drops, you get dizzy, weak, tired, you can faint, your speech is slurred, etc. For an adult it should be between 80-120 or so. It will be high after eating, especially if he eats carbs or sugar. Watch the breads, pasta, potatoes, crackers, etc. Good luck to you.

It's high...My daughter has type 1 since she been 10. The first thing that I caught was her getting up alot threw the night to use the bathroom..She was always thirsty. She would eat and have lot's of energy and then crash...She was very skinny..Her body was feeding off her muscle mass....Good-Luck it's a hard thing to watch your child go threw this. He could be still in the honeymoon stage where is is still producing insulin...But over time it changes and he will not produce. And then will become insulin dependent...

Call you Doc. and have him check right away. If this is it the sooner you catch it the better for him!!

I have diabetes myself...my parents first noticed that I lost so much weight...if he has lost some weight, drinking water, going to the bathroom at night, etc THEN DEF. GO SEE THE DOCTOR!!!

A person is diabetic by definition if they ever have a blood sugar of 160 or higher.

Anytime you even suspact that something like this is wrong witha child,Please take him in to get checked! and if you take a reading AFTER you eat, it is most always high. The Dr. will want to take a fasting blood sugar to get a true reading.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 at age 7. (I am also a nurse.) She lost weight, was very thirsty, tired and had periodic stomach pain.

Diabetes is very dehydrating as the body tries to clear the excess blood sugar. This is what causes the thirst and frequent urination. It can also cause constipation and stomach pain.

The cells of the body need insulin in order to absorb nutrients from the blood. In the absence of insulin, all the energy consumed stays in the blood in the form of glucose. Therefore, no matter how much the person eats, they are starving. This too, leads to weight loss, fatigue and stomach pain.

At the blood sugar levels you are describing, it sounds like he is in the early stages of type 1. If it gets above 240 or so, he will begin to feel much more ill. Persistantly above 400 or so, and he would need hospitalization and IV support to get insulin going and to rehydrate.

If he does have it, it will be life-changing for your whole family, but remember that it is a treatable disease. With good control he can have a healthy life without complications.

Please let us know what his fasting blood is this morning.
And best of luck to you.

Just read your fasting number for this moring. You should call today. That is not a high number for a diabetic, but it is definitely not a non-diabetic number, either. I'd be really surprised it he doesn't have it.

Please keep updating.

Why hasn't he seen a doctor yet?
