Newborn spitting up and throwing up?

My son is just over a week old and nursed. In the delivery room he spit up large amounts after nursing. The doctors said that's normal just after birth; however, he is still doing it, and it isn't always spit up, but rather throw up. Sometimes it projects four to six feet. He does this just after eating. It generally occurs twice a day and the rest of the day he is fine. Sometimes it comes out of his nose too. I also think he's constipated. He had plenty of diapers, but when he needs to go #2 it takes a lot of effort. He often sits and grunts for long periods of time before he gets anything out and then is content. Any suggestions and/or information is greatly appreciated.

Its a form of acid reflux.
Make sure you are burping more often to avoid the projectile and stock up on receiving blankets (I've usually always got 3 on the go)
It's awful I know, and do reccomend consulting with a pediatrican. My daughter was put on Losec and that didn't do diddly squat so today she was given something else (don't have it handy)

They're going to want to weigh him to be certain he is gaining, but even if it looks like a lot it mostly likely isn't. The constipation could def. be a side effect because of it...and with straining that and crunching tummy, it just leads to more coming up...never ending cycle!!

Good luck!

a friends of mines son was that way for 9months. from she's told me it is actually very common for newborns.. hopefully for your sake hedoesn't do it for an entire 9 mos.
i would check with a doctor anyways cause it could be something else you never know but my bet is that he's fine.

That's projectile vomiting. Sometimes, its ok, but talk with your pediatrician about it. They may need to check for Pyloric Stenosis.

When my granddaughter was a baby,(she is now 2) she spit up almost everything she ate for about 7 months. Her's would project really far also. It was a reflux problem or something like that. She wasn't breastfed, but we were always having to change her clothes and ours. Bibs didn't even begin to catch everything.

My son did that, when he was a few weeks old, and I found that I was overfeeding him a bit. He was breastfed only too. I just started feeding him for not quite as long, but more often and he stopped projectile vomiting all the time. You can also try burping him a bit more, that might help.

My friend had the same issue with her newborn and she also found that he was overeating a bit.

If it doesn't improve you should definitely consult your pediatrician as it can be an indicator of an infection or other medical issue.

As far as the bowl movements go, that should improve in time. He's newborn and it takes a while to get the hang of all his new bodily functions. As long as he is pooping every now and then he should be fine.

I agree with eryops...My nephew was born with Pyloric Stenosis, and the symptoms are projectile vomiting and constipation because the food is not reaching the stomach...Here is a link to give you a little more info on it...http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/dig...

Oh I feel so sorry for him. I don't want to scare you but sometimes the baby can be sensitive to your breast milk. Make sure what you are eating isn't too gassy or greasy. I nursed my son and he had colic, the doctor suggested I try formula just to see if he stopped crying. Well he did. So I decided to stop. It was a difficult decision. Also if he is really constipated try putting Vaseline on a thermometer and put it in his butt a little to stimulate the bowels. I also put Karo syrup (dark Syrup) in the bottle to soften his stools. Best of luck to you.

It could be that he may be getting to full. I nursed my son when he was a newborn and he would constantly vomit. I found out that it was possibly that he was eating too much, My ped. told me never to lay him on his tummy after eating. It could be gas, upset stomach. You never really know with babies. As long as you burp him after each feeding he should be fine. Good luck I hope it gets better for the both of you.

I too agree with eyrops...My second son had the same symptoms, but unfortunately it took the doctors almost 6 weeks before they diagnosed him with Pyloric Stenosis. HAVE HIM TESTED. It's just an ultrasound that does not hurt. If by chance he does have pyloric stenosis, then they will need to do surgery (which was harder for me to endure than my son) but by the day after surgery, he was happy, smiling, and best of all eating and keeping it down. He is now a big 8 mo old who is in the 90th percentile in weight and height.

Again, have him tested...you can never be too safe when it comes to your babies! Good luck.
