With a blame culture and witch hunts becoming the norm, is it worth it for anyone doing a difficult key job?

I'm asking this specifically about the calls for the police chief to resign, but there are many other examples across all the key services of people being crucified for doing their jobs.
Anti terrorist police/armed response teams are vilified for making a mistake. Yes, the example of the menendez (sorry for the spelling) case was a tragic mistake, but what about all the terrorist plots they have stopped, the good job they do 99% of the time? Why is that forgotten?
What about Nurses and Doctors who are sued for trying to help a patient? I'm about to qualify as a nurse and can think of numerous examples of nurses and doctors being brought under disciplinaries or even being sued and brought under criminal investigation when something goes wrong, which it sometimes does.
Im sure you can give your own examples
It seems to me to be a case of the left wing nomark liberals will scrutinize you every second of the day whilst you are doing these jobs, and crucify you the second you screw up.

Sorry if these seems like a rant, but it just makes me angry that the people who do these difficult jobs such as policing, nursing, medicine, paramedics, firefighters, etc genuinely want to help, yet are villified and crucified the second something goes wrong.

Yes there needs to be accountability, but at what level and at what cost?

Excellent question - Nowadays there such risks to holders of key jobs = not only decision-making, accountability, stress, long hours - but the vilification/criticism, complex attacks/whispering campaings, etc .etc. anyone taking a key role should be thanked & congratulated & offered support when things go wrong because of a mistake. 'To err is human, to forgive, divine'.
Anyway, so easy for people to criticise - could they do a better job?
Also, the press response to difficult situations can as has been shown, bring enormous stress & additional problems.

You will receive many answers to this, which will be interesting to read.
good luck.

I quite agree with you.One case where the police did deserve it was that of peter Woodhams who was shot dead in front of his wife and 3 year old son in Canning Town. This poor man had been slashed across his face some weeks previously and the police hadnt even been round to take a statement, even though his wife had rang them every day for 6 weeks. Two police officers were told to resign, but they still get their pensions.

part of taking a senior position is taking the flak when things go wrong

management should be leading from the top - and if something goes well... you can bet they will bask in the glory, whether they had anything to do with the success or not

with power comes responsibility. If procedures are so slack that the senior policeman responsible, has no idea what is going on then he deserves to go.

In most cases it's not the liberals suing at any mistake to make money.
They aren't the ones distorting most laws written for their short sighted gain. ( was not happy how endangered species act was used). Start reading the small print and following the dollar.
For every good dedicated honest professions there is political hack that does not care about quality, honesty. The really good ones know this comes with life and deal with it daily.

I don't think blaming left wing nomark liberals is the answer.
You may want to look at our legal system and the saturation of lawyers who get 30% of any settlement (who get's 30% accept mobsters and sharks) How about personal injury advertisements to solicit clients for "negligence" or "wrongfull death" in situations where doctors or other professionals doing their jobs are targeted.

No, my friend, you have only to look at our society and the notion that anyone can sue anyone for anything and not only that - it is your constitutional right and worth your time to sue. Our legal system makes it easy because if a lawyer senses a money-making case they will take it on with no payout until it is settled. Then they sweep in and take their 30%. What a racket!
If you want change then I suggest you write your Congressman/woman - but then again most of them are laywers too. And the one's that aren't have people on staff who are. To make it more vexing, we the taxpayer pay and pay and pay for these people to pass more legistlation to protect ..... more LAWYERS.
Here's a solution - I would sign up for nursing liability insurance. Then you're protected....NOT... until someone sues - then the insurance company increases your premium or drops you. Looks like lawyers and insurance companies have a lot in common. Don't get me started on banks.

One of consequence of the blame and compensation culture is that those doing a difficult job are no longer prepared to admit when they have made a mistake, as we all do sometimes. I do not necessarily think that the Metropolitan Police Chief should resign over the de Menezes shooting but he should be explaining exactly what went wrong, why it went wrong and what he is doing about it. Yes that will leave them open to further compensation claims and demands for more prosecutions, but if there is no accountability for mistakes, then how can we have confidence in the police or any other public service.
