Confused about nursing?

I have always wanted to be a nurse, but here's the catch, and please don't say i am crazy i hear that enough...

i can't stand needles, and i can't watch or listen to someone throw up. i am a very compassionate person, but i get a little nervous around sick people.

i know, you probably think i am an idiot and you wouldnt want me to be your nurse, but i just want some advice...anyone been through this?

a friend of mine that is a nurse told me that there are lots of nurses that are like that....hate vomit and dont really like needles but it gets to be part of their job and they dont think about it like that anymore, plus i dont have kids and everyone says once you have kids all that goes away...

help?

You're not an idiot and nursing is a great profession. A lot of my classmates have the same fear but it all passes. Plus your friend is right. The whole needle and vomit thing will pass. My professor kind of puts the whole nursing experience into perspective like this "if you see a hot naked person in the hallway, you'll blush; But if you see a hot naked person in the hospital, you'll probably not even notice." I think that's how it'll be for you with needles and vomit. You're scared of them right now but it'll be nothing for you in the hospital setting.

When you're in your clinical rotations, the nurses will help you learn little tricks to get over your fears. One nurse told me that when somethings smells (like a patient with some crazy bacterial infection and rotting flesh), use two mask with some toothpaste in between the masks. I'm sure you can do that with vomit. As for needles, you'll probably be scared the first few times you stick someone but after that it's just routine. Hope you still consider nursing. GOOD LUCK.

There are some jobs in nursing where you would not have to give shots, but it WILL be a part of training and would be necessary for you to learn as a critical part of your education.
Also- sick people vomit: it's a fact of life.
You have two options:
1. Get over it (learn how to block out unpleasant stimuli- smell, sight etc)
2. Do something else that involves no vomit or needles.

I'm not sure to tell u how to get use to it. I hate vomit, but it's not like u see it all the time. As far as needles go, No one like them persay, but You just have to tell yourself that you are doing it to help the patient. Honestly, If you are really compassionate about seeking a Nursing degree, that will honestly be the least of your worries. There will be other things that take place of those.

I have been a nurse for 20 years now, and your friends are telling you exactly right, you do get over it, some days you get so busy doing your job, you don't have time to be squeamish about anything, hope you follow through with your dreams of becoming a nurse, its a great field to be in, there are not enough of us around.

I know plenty of people in school with me (nursing school) and people I work with who can't stand needles and the sight of someone vomiting makes them vomit. It's perfectly natural to feel this way, and nurses, doctors, and other health care providers are not immune to this.

You will definately "get used" to it, or at least not be so bothered. You'll get used to to needles, maybe not getting shots yourself but you'll be able to give others shots. And the vomiting thing, yeah ok so it can be a little gross, but again, you get used to it.
