What is working at a nursing home like?

I am 18 and applying at the nursing home behind my apartments. In case I get it, I am curious as to what the job would be like. I am applying for housekeeping and dietary. Is there a lot of heavy lifting? Is it depressing to be in that environment? Is everything in the kitchen prepackaged? Any info on those 2 positions would be great so I can somewhat know what to expect if I get hired.

Don't worry. Unless you are a CNA, you should not be wiping any patients down or assisting with patient care. That will sheild you from most of the gross things.

If you are performing housekeeping, then the worst you'll really have to deal with will be nasty bed sheets. That's not so horrible with gloves and gowns. Just roll it all up and throw it in the hamper until it will be boiled/cleaned.

In a nursing home, prepackaged food will probably be about half of what you serve. Delivering trays will be nice though. Everyone is happy to see the person that brings them food. A great deal depends on how much you like the elderly as it is. Just remember that they're lonely, and they know where they are in life. If you smile, and humour them once in awhile then you'll probably learn to enjoy them as people.

Being around old people is very gross. I am old and I am gross. good luck

I work in dietary in the kitchen and its good but housekeeping has to suck, going in all those rooms and cleaning their toilets..yuck!!!! All in all its a decent job not the best of pay but your only 18 though still young

If you like to wipe butts its ok if you like to do all the work for no credit as you stand by and the r.n. gets all the credit for the work you did!!! YOu like the smell of bloody poop then its ok. YOu enjoy elder abuse then its ok. If you fancy the smell of rotted flesh and flesh so thin that it tears like paper then you might apply. Then every family member wants to blame you because they cant take care of their mom or dad very good either. But good luck it pays very little too like 595/weekly.

Stay Away From Nursing Homes It Can Be Depressing , Some Old People Get Nasty.

Retirement homes are better.
