Teen job pharmacy? |
I am 16 and turning 17 in April. I want to get a job over the summer. I want to go into the medical field (pharmacy) so I want a job relating to that. Where are some places that hire teens like pharmacies (phone person?), nursing homes?, hospitals? If you want to work in pharmacy, working in a hospital or nursing home is not very related to your future career goals. I would apply to work at a major pharmacy chain as a cashier. Places like CVS and Walmart often provide on the job training for their cashiers to become pharmacy techs, but you might have to wait until you are 18 to take advantage of that. I knew a girl right out of high school who was working at the local huge pharmacy chain as a tech. This was in 1993. I don't know if the requirements have changed, but it's worth looking into. She was working there while going to college and she is now a Pharmacist, so it helped her out. You should look up the tech requirements in your state. Some states require you to be 16 or 18 years old. If you want to be a pharmacist your best bet would be to try and find a pharmacy technician job somewhere like Walgreen's, CVS, Walmart, Target etc... At your age, though, the only real option you have would most likely be either A) volunteer work at the hospital, or B) a job working outside the pharmacy area. As for becoming a pharmacist, you'll need to have a pretty good GPA in your math and sciences to get into a 0-6 program, which is the program where you go through 6 straight years out of high school to get your pharmD. This is a lot easier than having to do 2 years of pre-requisites at a university, maintain a 3.5 GPA, go through an interview process, and obtain 2 letters of recommendation. The fact that you're interested in getting experience while you are young will go a long way in either situation if you do plan on going to a college of pharmacy; the admissions commission never frowns on pharmacy tech work. Some places will require you to get your Pharmacy Tech license before hiring and the test can be difficult if you haven't taken a course or studied well on your drugs. |
