I just asked a question about my employer giving me the job if im pregnant,?

i qualified as a nurse sept 07, i went for an interview last week and was offered the job as a staff nurse, today i found out im pregnant will they still let me have the job if they find out im only 5 weeks pregnant. im worried sick

I would avoid telling them until you start. Technically it is illegal to discriminate against you for being pregnant, but proving it can be another matter!

They cant discriminated against you

BUT

i would not tell them....

Personally I'd find it difficult to employ someone full time on a permanent basis if I knew I would be recruiting for their job again (at considerable cost) in a few months' time.

I would employ you on a contract until you're ready leave.

you are best bein honest with your employer before you start, ring them and talk to them. make sure you have a written offer before you do though, then if they hange their minds, you're cvered legally,

You have a right to work while pregnant. There are federal laws covering this. Take the job and then notify them if you are so worried. It is against federal law to discriminate. You should have no problems. If you do, contact the EEOC.

i don't know the exact legislation about employment law but i do know that they can't take back the job if you are pregnant

don't stress about it because you need to take care of yourself but i am pretty sure that they will still employ you

oh and by the way congratulations - enjoy this wonderful time x

So did I...and I'm a man.

Hello, I practice employment discrimination in Philadelphia and I have handled a few pregnancy discrimination cases.

First of all, you DON'T have to disclose the fact that you are pregnant. However, you should consider that if you have problems with your pregnancy, you might need to tell them that you are pregnant at some point so that you can ask for an accommodation if you need it. For example, maybe you cannot lift over a certain number of pounds because of your pregnancy. You can ask them for an accomodation (not having to lift over a certain weight) based on your pregnancy.

If they somehow discover that you are pregnant and fire you, or you tell them about your pregnancy and they fire you, that is an illegal termination and you may be able to sue them under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act or even gender discrimination laws.

EDIT: if you can, steer clear of the EEOC and go to your state agency that handles discrimination cases. The EEOC is the federal agency dealing with discrimination. I have about four cases pending in the EEOC and I'm not a huge fan of their work or their investigations. JMO.
