What do you think about male nurses facing on-the-job discrimination? |
http://iblognews.wordpress.com/ I think although it was a bit discriminatory, in that they didn't offer male chaperons to female nurses, it was an honest mistake. They (the hospital) was acting in fore site to the fact that women may be uncomfortable with a male performing intimate procedures. Although they went about this in completely the wrong way. They should have a policy in which if a patient (male or female) has to have an intimate procedure done they can ask for someone of their same sex to perform the procedure instead of the chaperon thing which is clearly discriminatory. Another genius...the article is from the U.K where AA laws do not apply the way they do in the U.S. As a female nurse I'm sorry to say that I haven't seen male nurses I work with being discriminated against. I have asked them and none of them feel like they have been discriminated against either. I do know for a fact during my nursing career I have worked several places where male nurses with my same experience or less have made more than I do. A lot of times I had many more years of experience than they did. Any on the job discrimination is wrong. This isn't the case in the US. I hope Britain gets its act together, because no one should not be discriminated against because of their gender. Discrimination on the job for anyone is reprehensible, and I hope those nurses get the equality they deserve. Male nurses are promoted quickly to management positions regardless of their abilities as a nurse which hardly can be described as discrimination. As for this article, men are very likely to take advantage of a female in a subordinate position, he may fend off the urge with most, but often one female catches his interest and she may be taken advantage of where as females are less likely to get aroused by a male that is her subordinate- women are usually interested in males superior not inferior! Female nurses are more likely to be sexually harassed by a patient than her harassing a male patient. Personally I have never felt attracted to a patient, but have been made very uncomfortable by their overtures. |
