What's the difference between nursing administration and nursing management?

What's the difference between nursing administration and nursing management?

It depends. Nursing management can mean small scale unit management, or broader to encompass an entire cost center / care center like an entire surgical center, and usually management implies that you have a staff you are resonsible for maintaining (hiring, training, disciplining), including staff nurses, charge nurses, NAs, unit coordinators, housekeepers, etc. You have a more active role in the day to day operations of your specialty area. You can be a nurse manager with a BSN, but many larger hospitals prefer a master's degree.

Nursing Administration is usually more of a broad scale job - like working in a hospital as the entire hospital's Patient Care Administrator (the ultimate nursing supervisor that deals with hospital-wide issues). You generally don't have a staff of nurses that you are responsible for hiring and firing for an individual unit, but might hire nurse managers for the units, etc. You help create patient care policies that affect the nursing care that is given and work with hospital-wide upper management. It's more behind the scenes work. And you *almost* always need a master's degree.

Some places use the terms interchangably. But technically they usually do mean different things.
