My Hermit Crab molted and slid out of his shell, no odor, looks dead have had hermie 10 mths.? |
Hermie is my first hermit crab out of 3, the 2nd and 3rd passed and my first has lived and fought and molted several times, he has had several successful molts with us. We love Hermie dearly and have been watchn this molt closely. This morning he was in his shell this afternoon he slid out and his eyes are open he looks dead.... the molting process is over he has his new shell and his eyes are shiny black and he lookes tired but has 0 life to him... when he slid out it took my all to not nurse him but i had to he was out of his lil shell i moistened him and gently slid him back in by sliding a napkin under him and sliding him back into his shell and laying the shell in the crab hut with him in it and him lookn at me if he is still alive. he is not moving but again no odor maybe he jusss now died and the odor waiting or maybe he had a ruff molting... i am scared for hermie! HELP HERMIT CRAB PROS! Hi Pharfly, I have a combo of 60% sand and 40 % Soil with the sand going about 1/2 tank deep, he tried to molt under the sand but did a top molt this time round... it happened when it did i guess, sheese i am watchn his lil behind 10 mths to me this is my 1st and ya know I am inluv if he made it past 2 others from the pet store, Hermie came home with my daughter last june and became my lil buddy! our whole fam's buddy "lil crabs" :) I had 4 hermit crabs but one of them did what yours did. What you should do is clean the inside of his shell, sometimes it moves out because it is uncomfortable and has sand in the shell. Also put water next to him because mine went into the water then moved back into the clean shell. That is what i did but good luck. : ) Molting is very stressful on hermies. What do you use as a substrait? It sounds like he did a topside molt. The rule is make the substrait 2X as deep as you largest crab. use sand or eco earth fiber. Gravel is not a good choice. The also need 80% humidity they have modifided gills that must stay moist or they will die. Molting is a tiresome process for the crab. Personally I would not touch him until several days later, unless it is evident he is dead (strong fishy smell). He may have already passed; and you caught it so soon there was no smell yet. Just keep an eye on him for a day or two. |
