Help! Min-Pins...can anyone can tell me a little about them?

I found a starving miniature pinscher and nursed her back to health. She has a vet appoitment in 2 weeks. She's so sweet but what I want to know is how to get her to walk with me and not try to gallop when walking her. I can feel her pulling the leash which is long enough to allow her room but yet she wants to go faster. I live in the city and I'm afraid to let her run loose b/c she barks a lot at other dogs. Since she added weight, takes nice soapy baths, and is shown love - people who once frowned upon her tells me how beautiful she looks and she always receives compliments on her walks. I'm not sure how old she is yet, but she is one smart dog. So can someone guide me through the process of what to do? Would she run away if I let her leash go in the park? I wish I had a back yard for her. Are there any other things that I should know about this kind of dog? Are there things I should avoid? This is my first dog so thanks for listening any advice would be helpful.

You are a great person for rescuing that poor little animal!
And your patience and determination are wonderful!
Minpins are great little dogs. They are perfectly fitted for a city environment because they take up little space and don't require a large exercise area.
As a breed, however, they can be difficult to train because of their outgoing and stubborn personalities. First of all, you should get a martingale collar for your pin, as they have a reputation for stepping right out of their collars in a flash. The martingale should have chain on the portion that retracts, so when your little pin is galloping down the street, you can give the leash a short and gentle tug and your pin will hear the sound. A good "no" accompanying that will start your pin on the road to leash training. It can be daunting, because the energy level of these little cuties never ends, but perseverance will give you a well-trained dog.
One other note-please don't EVER let your pin off the leash. That is probably how she got lost in the first place. These dogs were bred as ratters, and will follow anything that moves without regard to their owners commands. And they are so fast you will never see your little friend again!
Pins are also very social dogs who love to be with their owners and do everything with them. Enjoy your new friend and thanks for rescuing!

on the leash training parts try leashing training her with a gentle halter they are almost like riens on horses kudos for you to take in a homeless dog:)

good job

my mini pincher used to do the same thing shed always tug and want to go faster
i bought her a training leash (dont know exactly what its called) but its the one that pulls her head back if shes goin to fast and pullin (no choke chains those suck) and now she does really good on walks
take ur dog out maybe twice a day for a few minutes at first to let it get used to it

Min Pins are great dogs, I'm owned by three.

There are alot of specific things about them that would be helpful..too many to go into here..you can contact me via email or check out the FREE Santa Clara County Min Pin group I moderate and you'll meet a lot of Min Pin owners http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/SCCMi...
