Anyone have any experience with using Reglan for building up your milk supply?

I am in the process of relactating. I have tried pumping for a couple weeks, taking different herbs and teas and also using a supplemntal nursing system. I just got Reglan yesterday. I have heard that one of the side effects of this is that it can build up a milk supply. I was wondering if anyone has ever used this before or know much about it. It is said to be just a one a day tablet, but was wondering if it was a different dosage when you are wanting to use it for this. Thanks!

Reglan has often been used in the U.S.. One major side-effect of Reglan is severe depression; it is contraindicated in moms with a history of depression, and all moms who take this should keep an eye out for signs of depression. One of my sources advises all adoptive mothers to stay away from Reglan, since it has caused serious depression/anxiety in moms regardless of previous history. This depression side effect usually develops over 3-4 weeks, and goes away if mom discontinues the Reglan. Other side effects include diarrhea, sedation, gastric upset, nausea, seizures and extrapyramidal effects (twitching, etc.)

Domperidone has been used successfully in Canada and other areas of the world, and has significantly fewer side effects than Reglan. It has been approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics for use in breastfeeding mothers, and has been given Lactation Risk Category L1 ("safest") in the 2004 edition of Medications and Mothers' Milk. It is not widely available in the U.S. - you may be able to get a compounding pharmacy to make it for you if your doctor prescribes it, or may also be able to order it from Canada or other countries). See the links below for more info.

Sulpiride is commonly used in various countries including Zimbabwe, South Africa and Chile. The primary use for sulpiride is for schizophrenia (it is an antipsychotic and antidepressant), but it also increases serum prolactin levels and thus can enhance breast milk yield.

* Per the AAP Policy Statement The Transfer of Drugs and Other Chemicals Into Human Milk, revised September 2001.
** Per Medications' and Mothers' Milk by Thomas Hale, PhD (2004 edition)
鈥?Per the AAP, classified as "Drug whose effect on nursing infants is unknown but may be of concern." AAP notes on this drug: "reported or possible effect: none described; dopaminergic blocking agent"; "Drug is concentrated in human milk relative to simultaneous maternal plasma concentrations." Hale reports results of a number of studies and indicates that domperidone is preferred but not available in the US. He notes that no pediatric concerns have been reported via milk, and that this drug is commonly used in pediatrics.

metoclopramide ( reglan) is a medication used oten for vomiting or GER. However it is also used to increse milk supply in lactation. it works by stimulation he secreation of prolactin a hormone released from your body after you have a baby, it reavels through your blood to your breast cells where it stimulates milk to be produced during pumping or feeding. on day one you would typically tae 2 tablet on days 2 you tyPICALLY TAKE 2 ONE AM and one pm, on days 3-10 you typically take 3 one am one mid day and one pm on day 11 your back to 2 on am and one pm and day 12 back to one. but you should follow the instructions given to you by your dr. and ask about this routine.

Hey! Well, I don't know too much about Reglan for relactating... but I did take it for a while for gastroparesis (a stomach disorder)... and my impression is that it's a pretty scary drug. It worked pretty well for nausea, which was a godsend for me, but I quit taking it after a few weeks because it made me feel so high and stupid.... and emotional. I couldn't keep a thought in my head for more than two seconds, it felt like - when my calc teacher asked me what was wrong with me, and why I couldn't manage doing the problems anymore, I burst into tears.

It was all just very weird - sleepy and then shaking and jumping out your skin - and falling down for no reason. Ugh... I don't take it anymore because it was too hard to manage the side effects and school.

Sorry, I know that's not a very good report - but lots of people react differently to it. I was on 40 mgs a day (4 tabs), which I think is a higher dose than for lactation... and I hear it makes even men lactate (yikes! :) so apparently it does its job. I hope it works okay for you! Best -
