Pregnant again- Could I be losing my milk?

I have an 11 month old that still almost exclusivly breastfeeds. I am not sure if I am still producing enough milk for him. I just recently found out I am pregnant again (possibly 2 weeks along- no period to measure by). Could this cause me to lose milk? He was sick this holiday weekend and we brought him into the doctor for it when they took his weight he is now off the chart for his weight (17.5) they think he might have lost a few pounds from being sick... but he didnt have diahreha or vomiting so i dont think so. He has wet diapers so he must be getting something. I had planned on nursing for at least a year and a half- so I havent started the weaning process yet. Do you know how common it is to loss milk once your pregnant again?

When you get pregnant your breasts become "leaky" which means they don't store as much milk. For some all this means is they have to feed more often or longer to get the same amount of milk.

However some babies may refuse the milk or drink less just because of the taste.

Trust in your baby though, as long as you offer foods and water they should take more if they are getting less breastmilk. I was in basically the same position as you, I got pregnant just before my son was a year (not on purpose *lol* but also not "how did that happen"). My milk supply decreased somewhat and he still nursed but he also started eating a lot more, and more telling he drank a tonne of water particularly at night. When my milk came back in after delivery he stopped eating altogether for a month, now he is starting to eat more again but still not like he was before.
Red Raspberry leaf and alfalfa (teas of caplets) are two herbs that are safe during pregnancy and may increase milk supply (I have a million links on RRL if you want them just e-mail). There are others but those are the ones I used. Fenugreek is not recommended during pregnancy.

About 26% if babies will self-wean during pregnancy. Some may go back to nursing after the new baby is born.

There is NO reason to stop nursing during pregnancy.

I haven't heard of that personally. I am pregnant and still nursing my 1 1/2 year old with no signs of it affecting my milk supply. I also know of moms that nurse up to having baby #2 without problems. You might want to ask your doctor. Your baby really needs more nutrients than just breast milk so you really need to add in solid foods. He probably isn't getting enough from milk alone, please talk to his pediatrician about his diet. This is serious. He should be eating by now.

He may just be trying to wean himself. Eleven months is pretty old to be exclusively fed on breast milk. I'm not criticizing late nursing, I'm just saying that his nutritional needs are maybe more than just breast milk can provide.

My midwife said you dont actually lose your milk, but your baby will have to work harder and longer to get it out. That's nature contribution to encourage weaning just by making it harder...but it is safe to keep nursing.

At 11 months your son is probably moving around a lot more that would be why he may have dropped a little weight. It seems fine, babies build up a little fat store for when they begin to walk.

well they recommend that if you fall pregnant again then you should stop breast feeding. it could just be that your son just isnt drinking as much and therefore your milk supply is going down. talk to your doctor about it.

Your dr will tell you to stop brestfeeding bc it's going to be taking from you and ur new baby. Just keep that in mind.

Please listen to mystic--she's currently nursing a baby and a toddler (she rocks!) so at least she knows what she's talking about re: nursing and pregnancy.

My mom always regretted that the doctor told her to wean me when she got pregnant with my sister--she found out later that they DO NOT recommend weaning just because you're pregnant, as long as you and your child want to continue, it's usually OK to do so.

His weight loss is probably more from increased physical activity. My first dropped to the bottom of the charts when he was 12 months--because he was running! He was also taller but his weight hadn't of kept up. He recovered easily a few months later (and we were still nursing.)

i was pregnant with my third when i was still breastfeeding my second.i had no problem but stop on my son 1rst birthday,so i took 2 months break before the birth of my daugther, she is now 5 months and is breastfeeding also. the more you're breasfeeding, the more you are producing milk.does your son cries a lot(a sign it does not get enough milk),does he seems to eat every hour or so..do you give him also regular food...i would not be alarm for his lost weight, does he walks yet?my sons lost some weight when they starting to be more active.if you really are concern i would ask his pediatrician..good luck.
