How long will it take for my body to adjust to weaning?

I've been slowly weaning my son from nursing for the last 3 months. (He's 18 months old.) We have only done 1 nursing session a day for the last 2 months. I finally quit for good 2 1/2 weeks ago. I was surprised at how well he handled it. However, my body is totally out of whack. I felt fine for the first 2 weeks, but for the past 2-3 days, I've been so engorged that it hurts to move my arm (if it hits the side of my breast). (AND it's only my right side...weird!) Is there anything I can take to help this or anything I can do to make this process go quicker. I don't mean drugs, I mean certain herbs or vitamins to decrease or stop milk production. How long does it take to recover from this? I knew it wouldn't be easy, but this is crazy.

Unfortunately, engorgement can happen when weaning, even though you tried to do it slowly. Some moms will pump a little bit for decreasing amounts of time after the baby is off the breast, but you are past that point. If it is very painful, try to just express a tiny amount to relieve the discomfort. Watch that soreness too, you don't want to end up with a clogged duct.

Check out this link on "Comfort measures for mom when weaning." It has tips on how to help reduce milk supply, including natural treatments.

It wont hurt for long at all. Maybe a few more days tops. Just stay active, maybe restrict your food and water for a couple days (dont starve, just cut back) it'll slow down production.

:) You're doing fine.

My weaning story is a bit different from yours, but I can tell you that you're probably suffering from your final engorgement.

If I were you, I would pump to relieve some pressure, but do not empty your breast.

Chances are, you won't need to do it again.

BTW: Sudafed PE (pseudoephedrine) helps dry milk up. you have to ask for it behind the pharmacy counter now, but if it helps, who cares?!?!
