Breastfeeding mommy's! Help me!? |
My son is 3 weeks old and breastfeeding has been going great BUT when he nurses on the right side he will eat for 5 minutes then jerk his head back and tense up his body like stretching and in the process he pulls my nipple and it hurts SO bad...now when he latches to that side it is extremely painful (doesn't hurt WHILE nursing though) after the whole pulling episode he continues to eat and might do it again once or twice....I need help, I can't imagine him doing this forever.I know he is not mad because no milk is coming because I hear him swallowing and he is suckling like there is milk coming.Anybody had this problem? What can I do to make him stop doing this? I have tried the thing where I gently push his face into my breast so he learns not to do it but this just makes him more mad and then I feel terrible for doing it to him......*dilemma* Wow ann, thanks for the link! It must be my let-down because he does ALL those things when nursing on that side. You might have a fast milk ejection reflex that he has trouble keeping up with and he's trying to regulate it. There are many things you can do. I suggest you read this article: You might want to take him to the doctor. I breastfed my son for the first four months and he would kind of do the same thing. He would arch his back and get really "antsy" like he was irritated. I took him to the doctor and she said that he had reflux and I had to start giving him Zantac twice a day. That really helped alot and after about 3 months I stopped giving it to him cause it seemed to get better.....Maybe you could call your pediatrician and just ask. Hope this helps :) Since he only does it on the right side he may just prefer the other nipple. My daughter prefers the left side, and she gets a little more fidgety and does that exact same thing on the right side. She's growing out of it though. I found that if I offer her the preferred side first when she's already over-stimulated, she was more likely to take it. If I offer her the right side when she's already mad, she'll refuse it. It also helps if she's sleepy - that way she doesn't know that she's on that side. |
