When would be a good time to nurse my baby again?

Last night my husband and I went out to celebrate our birthdays. My daughter is now 8 months old and does not nurse all day anymore,just a few times during the day. I had four drinks all rum & cokes. They were about 6 to 8 oz. I had my first drink at 12 and last at 2:30am. It is now 8 am.I have a head ache right now and feel a bit queezy. I have not eaten much since. When would be a good time to nurse her safely? Is there anything I can do to help the process? Thanks so much.

There is nothing you can do to speed elimination of the alcohol from your system. It leaves your milk in the same way it leaves your bloodstream.

The general rule of thumb is, if you feel sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to nurse. If your brain is clear, your milk is too.

If you downed 4 drinks in 2.5 hours and it's only been 5.5 hours since the last one, I'd say you should definately be OK to nurse by 10:30, if you aren't already. (Everyone's body metabolizes it differently, but about 2 hours per drink is a good rule.)

"Pumping & dumping" does not speed elimination of alcohol from your milk. If you are feeling engorged, you can pump some for your own comfort but it won't do anything to get the alcohol out of your milk supply.

Give it 24 hours and you should be good. If you wait to long, you'll go dry.

I would say that probably around 11a.m. would be fine to nurse her. If you just had one drink (not straight up), you could've nursed her immediately. But, it takes approximately 2 hours per drink to get out of your system, if you drink water, too. So, start drinking water and wait until about 11 or 11:30 this morning.

Pump out what you have in you and then the next time you 'fill up' you should be ok to nurse her. If there's anything left in the milk by then she will just take a good nap. I had to nurse my son for 15 months so I had that situtation a few times. He was fine.

please don't nurse your baby because you had drinks in your system. your milk will have the drinks in it. and you will give it to the baby. I would wait 24 hours

You should drink lots of water and eat something with starch/high carbs in it I think to help absorb the alcohol from your blood. Ok, that last part I'm throwing out there from the cobwebs of my mind (high school health class is a LONG time ago for me). I agree with the 'no reason to pump and dump' comment, I've heard that is a waste of time. I'd say wait until your head has cleared a bit, say in another hour or two, then you should be ok to nurse her.

Nurse her now. I'm sure she'd like a nice stiff belt under her diaper. Maybe then she'll take a nice long nap.
