Experience with Supplemental Nursing System (SNS)?

Hello. I am in the process of trying out using one of these. I have a 12wk old baby boy and I am trying to get my milk supply back up. I have been dried up for a little over a month now. I am on Fenugreek and a nursing supplement, also blessed thistle and drinking mothers milk tea. I was pumping for 2wks 5times a day, with nothing more then just a little bit of milk. So I started this up. It is a little difficult to use and my son gets pretty frustrated quickly because he is so use to the bottle.

So my questions are:

Have you had any experience with this, what did you think of it. Any advice? How did you get your baby to latch on? How long did it take till baby really had an ease at this? What did you use it for? How long till your milk came it without needing this? Any other thoughts on things to use or take to help my milk come in better? And just any advice or thoughts that you have for me on this subject! Thank you so much!!!!

I haven't used the SNS, but I've heard of adoptive mothers using it to establish their milk. So, it sounds like a a great idea if you are trying to re-establish your own milk. It is just going to be a matter of time, patience, and a lot of 'if at first you don't succeed try, try again'.
I pumped at work 3 times a day for 12 of the 14 months I nursed. Pumping is not as efficient as nursing so eventually my supply dropped a lot. After trying more "natural" solutions my lactation consultant recommended the prescription drug Reglan (generic - metoclopramide). What it is normally used for is stomach problems like diarrhea and reflux...it is even given to newborns. The side effect for lactating women is increased milk supply. I took it twice while I was nursing for 10 days each time. It REALLY worked well. My supply increased greatly very quickly.
Make sure you are getting a lot of water. This will increase fluids in your body including the breastmilk.
I've always noticed on the days I eat oatmeal my milk supply seems larger.
Another thing is to get a good, deep latch. The more breast tissue they get in their mouth the better they will nurse and the faster your own milk supply will build up. If you get the baby latched and they only have the nipple or just not much breast tissue in their mouth then pull them off and try again for a good latch. A bad latch can damage a mom's breast, make mom not want to breastfeed, and not stimulate much milk production. Since newborns are new at this skill of nursing it will take some time and practice for mom and baby to get things going smoothly on a consistant basis, and if you are having trouble with it try nursing the baby in different positions (cradle hold, football hold, laying on your sides in bed). While we were getting the hang of things the football hold worked well for my first but the laying in bed worked well for my second baby. I will just take some trial and error to figure out what works.

I'd really suggest getting a book and going to see the lactation consultant at the hospital...a consultation is usually free. Good luck!
