Bipolar??? |
My sister is currently employed as a nurse, and has just been diagnosed with Bipolar. it is ILLEGAL to stop someone from being employed in any job due to mental illness unless their illness prevents them from carrying out her job properly. if she can not function in the workplace centerlink will assist her but will require medical accessment. im new to this thing.. but.. i have some questions please. of course, it's legal. Your medical records are technically supposed to be sealed. I am bipolar, ocd, self injurer, and add to name a few labels assigned to me, and I work with the mentally ill *shrug*. As long as she is under the care of a doctor and is taking medication for her symptoms, she should be able to continue her work. There r excellent medications for the treatment of Bipolar diagnosis, but they must be consistently taken to keep the patient on a level balance. Good luck to her in her work and wellness. I am a licensed practical nurse diagnoised with bipolar and schizoeffective disorder. I don't flaunt it around to my boss and my co-workers. It is legal, she just has to know her limits and ask for time off when she is going through a hard time. I actually went in front of my state's board of nursing before and admitted i was mentally ill and they were just concerned that I was taking my meds and taking care of myself. At the time I didn't know that I had Bipolar, I was just diagosed with depression at the time. It takes 8-10 years usually before a person gets diagosed with bipolar. my mom is employed at a hospital here and she works with a nurse that is also bipolar. the nurses condition is under control and she holds down her job. I dont think you should have any problem once she gets under control with medicine. My mom seems to think that you can do or be anything as long as you take your medicine. good luck! |
