I am a civil engineer in the Philippines, what will be the most demand engineering works in the US w/o license.

I am currently working at the City Engineering Department as Head of the Materials Quality Control Section. My primary responsibility is to check and monitor whether the projects conform to the plans and specifications both contract and by administration.I also handle some special projects both vertical and horizontal construction. My wife is now in the first phase in applying abroad as a nurse.I know that my profession will not be honored in the states without stateboard. What field or what particular engineering works can I apply which fit my qualifications assuming I am not already an engineer? My expertise is more on roads construction and materials testing or geo technical investigation.I am responsible right now with our construction in landfill with consultant from German Development Services.

If you enjoy working outdoors I suggest you look for work as an entry-level inspector. It is very similar to approving plans and specifications--you are now enforcing those plans and specifications. Most municipal construction inspectors do not have a civil engineering degree. If you want to work for a private firm you can hire on as a drafter and you may be able to work up to design from that position. Either way, you will not become rich but you can certainly live comfortably with your wife working as a nurse.

I also recommend you look at what state your wife chooses to work in and google "State Name" and "Professional Engineer" to see what it would take to become licensed as a civil engineer. In Virginia, you would be given the chance to become a civil engineer but it would take awhile and you would have to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and the Professional Engineering exam.

I'm a material science/engineer, not civil, but you can find work here in the US in the same position you have now, provided you can get the proper credentials.

Of course, as you say, you will need the credentials for a civil engineer to work as a civil engineer. It may be possible to get your civil engineering degree "on-line" over the Internet by a recognized on-line school. If this can be accomplished, you would then take the test for Professional Engineer (PE) in your field. You are licensed (recognized) by the particular state you live in to practice civil engineering. The requirements are generally 11 years experience in the discipline, or 5 years working under a PE before you take the test.

Even if you don't get your PE, you can work as a degreed civil engineer, but you can't sign off on drawings: that must be done by a PE.

You can find work without the degree, but you will be considered an hourly worker subject to labor law, not a professional worker "exempt" from labor law. You could work hourly until you finished your degree/credential, provided you could find a company to 'sponsor' you under immigration programs (I forget the number of the green card; H1-B?)

Another alternative to coming straight to the US: go to Canada first, then migrate to the US from Canada. The entrance is perhaps easier than direct from the Philippines if the quota is full. You would have to balance the time it takes to get your credentials with the job prospects in either the US or Canada.

There is a lot of new construction, so there is work for civil engineers either in real estate development, or in city government.

Nurses are very much in demand, but the pay isn't very high considering the demand and the education required. There are five or so levels of nursing; my sister is going to school for the next 18 months to certified as a 'Nurse Practitioner' (NP), one step below a Registered Nurse (RN). Both jobs (nursing/civil engineering) would give you flexibility where to locate, but Las Vegas, Nevada and Florida are two growing areas with lots of new construction.
