The impact of Florence nightingale?

What are the long lasting impacts of Florence Nightingale on NURSING?

1. I already have down that she pioneered and elevated the profession of nursing.
2. DO NOt give me the link to wikipedia as i have already looked at that site and found the information to be completely and utterly incorrect.
3. Why was she so important?
thanks Kindly!

Florence Nightingale realized that germs caused death and therefore insisted equipment be cleaned between surgeries. Also she promoted standards of nursing care to make effective care universal.

Unintentionally she was a feminist. She did not act to promote women鈥檚 rights, she worked to improve the quality of care to humans, but being a female and not stirring sentiments of feminism she did open the door for women to seek a profession.

If one announces a fight, surely rebellion will make the fight harder. She fought for better care of patients and caused a demand for women to be in the work force rather than fighting for the right to work.

She promoted independence from the medical association, she developed the standard of compassionate care, and she initiated the bedside role that only nurses can fulfill. Also she brought about the notion of nursing being a profession whereas women can demand pay and benefits that make us non dependant on a man. (Today, many nurses are the supporters of their family- both men and women).

Look up the histories of the following:

Fray (Friar) Juan de Mena
(The first Male nurse in America)

Mary Seacole
The black woman upon whom the 'legend' of F.N. is based.

Mary Eliza Mahony
1st African-American R.N. in U.S.of A.

James Derham
Ex-slave and Male Nurse

Ethel Fenwick
The very first Nurse to ever be listed on the first Nurses Register.

Rufaidah bint Sa'ad
Founder of Islamic nursing in the 1st century A.D.

Florence Nightingale is considered important because she used her patriotic feelings, organisational ability and connections to establish successful field hospitals for soldiers, using a 'military' structure (hierarchy) which was later successfuly transferred to civilian medical care.

'Nursing' has been around since the dawn of time, and although there is a lot of sentimental nonsense talked about Nightingale redefining nursing, whatt she actually did was introduce modern management techniques into the field and employ a largely female workforce in a disciplined and socially acceptable fashion.

She also worked in the field of public health until old age, doing much to introduce more hygenic practices and the district nurse programme.

Try a couple of the links below and good luck :-)

Yes, she did all those wonderful things and then died of tertiary syphilis.
