Why are women 'type-casted' into specific professions?

It seems that in today's society - women (like myself) are geared to fullfill 'nurturing' professions just as in teaching or nursing professions for example or even to stay settle down and have a few kids...but, when none of these choices are an option - what do you do?

What I mean is that I am a women in an IT profession - I feel like I am being type-casted by my company in doing the 'secretarial' type duties than being able to broaden my skilll set and advance in my field. I am a college graduate and have the desire to learn - but feel that I am not taken serious - 'cause I am a woman. (It seems to be a boys club at my job - really frustrating!!) Any suggestions what I should do to branch out to doing other things within my profession?

Well being a women you can go to any profession. I have known many successful women in Business and in Medical profession. The only thing is that young generation of women are gearing more towards easy jobs. I was so surprised to see 99% of the liberal art major were women. And they didn't want to teach at aUniversity level, they wante dto be Elementary school teacher.
Nursing is no longer a women profession. Men have entered this professions and are making more than women.
For some reasons, not too many young girls are motivated for higher jobs. They want to stay dumb blond to their boyfriends. Or many of them get pregnant at a very young age and in the name of motherhood, scarifice their careers.

Well what kind of degree you have. May be you are in a wrong company. My college professor told me once ," get out of a place where you see yours elf type cast."
Go for your MBA and then see how people take you. Find a new job or a company that appreciate your skills.
