Nurses..would you advise your son/daughter to enter the profession?

or would you encourgage them to try a new field.?

nurses are special people ...they have to tolerate nastiness among the sickness, rudeness beyond comprehension, and long hours on their feet... they must have more compassion than most any other kind of professional- because we are vulnerable when we are sick- and we need them to comfort us . If your child possesses those qualities, absolutely encourage them to explore nursing as a career ... it is not only rewarding, the pay is quite nice too

I would neither discourage or encourage any profession, bec i am a nurse and I had to enter it by chance not by choice. But bec i went to a good nursing schools I have no regrets..in fact I think nursing perse or any other profession has got its own pitfalls Report It

It's a great field, high demand, and high paying.

Nursing is an excellent profession for a multitude of reasons. First, because of the predicted 20% shortage of nurses by 2010, the pay scale and benefits of registered nurses (RN) is going up quickly. Second, the job security and portability offered by nursing is almost second to none, some traveling nurses make six figures a year. Third, there are so many facets in nursing that almost anyone could be interested. There are surgical nurses, medical surgical nurses, hospice nurses, and some that just take care of the feet of diabetic patients. Finally, it is a job that lets you care for people and get paid! But be warned, there is a lot of science comprehension involved. If your child doesn't like science and still wants to care, think about social work.

Only if you really care about helping people. It's not for everyone. The good thing is you can get a job anywhere with better than average pay.

It takes a special person to be a nurse and if your heart isn't in it, I wouldn't advise it for any one. It can't be all about the money, you have to be compassionate, patient with people, understanding, reliable, honest, knowledgeable and use critical thinking skills on a daily basis. I would encourage any one with these traits to enter nursing, we need you....there's such a shortage of nurses and it's not easy at times but it's a very rewarding profession. Nurses also have a great variety of choices to what area they would like to work, whether it be hospital (many choices here: ICU, open heart recovery, operating room, recovery room, telemetry, med/surge, pediatrics, labor/delivery.....) a doctor's office, clinic, school nurse, home health, nursing homes, research, nursing instructors, and many more. It's a great profession to be in :-)

I've been lucky enough to have been a RN for the past 20 years! I love my job, there is nothing else I would ever do! But for me, I guess I was lucky- I always knew I'd be a nurse. True it does take a lot of hard work to become a RN- but well worth it. The joy you experience from knowing that you've made 1 person's life a little easier is unbelievable!! What a great thing to help people! On the down side- there is a lot of BS that goes with the job, so you have to be willing to put up with doctors who don't see the value in nurses, hospital administration not giving you the time or support that is needed when dealing with sick patients. But (for me at least), the joy I get from my job makes all the BS seem like nothing. In my opinion there is no better job than being a NURSE!!!
