Do you think retired teacher and retired nurses should stay retired from their profession?

In Ontario, there is a shortage of full time work in these professions.I think those professionals who took early retirement should stay retired and enjoy that retirement and let the new graduates get an opportunity to work fulltime in the profession.People who have continue to work are getting more hours than the recent grads who are lucky to get hours. Why should a retiree be able to get the best of both worlds. Why aren't their unions fighting for the new grads?

Recent grads cannot find fulltime work and yet supposedly retired people are getting more work than the recent grads.Grads should not have to move out of the country to find work in their chosen profession unless it is made from choice not economic necessity.I know someone who is retired and is getting a full pension and still working full time most weeksShe is hired as an occasional worker but routinely gets scheduled shifts .She claims the recent grads don't want the shifts and yet I heard from someone else that that is not the case.I think that it is fiscal irresponsibility. When do the recent grads get to do what they trained to do?

I can only answer on behalf of what is going on here in Arizona in education. There are severe shortage of QUALITY teachers. In Arizona, it is a right to work state, so basically no unions. I also happen to live in an area where 30% of the population are retired 'snow birds/winter vistors'.

At a recent Board Meeting, it was discussed on how we can persuade some of the retired teachers to come back into the classroom. We had a successful story of a retired teacher from the Midwest come back to the classroom for an 8 week maternity leave. We also have some retired teachers volunteer in the classroom.

The problems with new graduates is that these newbie teachers are so stressed out from day one of school and are ready to burn out by Christmas break. They get so much piled on their plates, and nothing ever gets taken away. It was also discussed how retired teachers could help become a mentor teacher for these newbies. But, it works 2 ways: Retired teachers retire for a reason! No one necesarrily forces them out of the classroom. At least here in Arizona when we have teacher shortages. Yet, contrary to that statement, many old-timers are no longer certified to teach. Certifications do expire, and the new NCLB requirements force a teacher to continue with a certian number of credit hours for certification renewal. Many retired teachers simply find it a hassle to go through the re-certification process.

Hope this might shed some light on the situation here in Arizona.

I wish America had this problem. We have a shortage of teachers and nurses

No, if they don't need the money they can volunteer and make use of their knowledge. Retirement will be a word of the passed as SS can and will not cover our expenses when we are old. There are also not enough young people to make enough money to support the aging population. We live longer and have many productive years ahead of us even after retirement. As long as they do what they love it is great. It will keep them young. But it is sad if they have to go back to work because they did not save for their retirement.

Ps. We have a shortage of teachers and nurses because they don't get paid enough. There are many people educated as teachers who opt to work in other fields because they too have to make a living. You change that and we will have all the qualified teachers and nurses we need.

i think if u like the work and still b able to do it,then do it
