Why do a lot of Filipinos do Nursing as a career or they are in the Medical field?

I grew up in a very populated area where there are many Filipinos. Most families that I know have at least one relative that has a profession in Nursing or Medicine. It seems to be a very popular field.

My mom's a nurse and my dad's a physical therapist. I don't want to do Nursing and I major in Computer Information Systems and a minor in Multimedia. I am excited for this profession that I plan on going into because people wouldn't have advanced if it wasn't for technology.

My family and some other Filipinos think it's not a good profession or career, they try to persuade me into going into another medical major. It is just sad to see that they are very biased on the medical field and I wish to see that other people of the same ethnicity try other professions and not just Nursing. I'll admit that if you like the profession that is fine, but sometimes I think that filipino students have only seen the medical field and don't know what is else out there. Some choose it as a last resort.

I'm related to 2 Filipinos and they're both ER nurses. They told me they only did it for the money. Which I think isn't a good reason. I say go with what your heart tells you. You don't have to be a doctor or nurse to be successful.
