Why are there so few young people taking up nursing as a profession?

Why are there so few young people taking up nursing as a profession?

I think few young people are taking up the Nursing profession because they have not been taught to care for others and the way "they" learn this is by being taken care of themselves.

This generation and the next will be, in my opinion the most irresponsible generations of all times. Parents today tend to go from one extreme to the other - they either give them everything they want or spend no time with the kids at all. Children learn by example. Both of these are selfish, because they are both setting the kid up for failure.

It's a selfish (it's all about me) society we live in today. If parents are doing their own thing - who's taking care of the children? Being a "public servant", and that's what a nurse is.....has to be a natural gift. Compassion is involved. If there's no compassion........then it's just a JOB.

It pays good

I thought it was a popular major now. I can think of about 10 friends off the top of my head who are nursing majors. Probably more if I really thought about it.

Because it absolutely blows to work in a hospital. My cousin is a nurse and she doesn't make much of a salary either.

I thought the problem was a lack of nursing schools, not students. I could be wrong.

Excuse me, but students today realize that nursing is a challenging, yet extremely rewarding, career choice. Just like any other career, nursing isn't suited for everyone, and those people simply decide on different majors. I am a freshman nursing student in the best nursing program in my state. Out of all the majors offered at this university, the nursing department is always the first to close admissions, generally within the first few days of begining their considerations. They accept 50 nursing students into the program each year. There is a waiting list pages long of people wishing to get into the program. My cousin of the same age is currently enrolled in a nursing program at a different school, and they too close admissions only a few days after opening. I had a high school graduating class of 80, and at least 6 of us, including myself, were set to go on to various nursing programs. I think you need to take a look at statistics before you make such accusations.

I didn't realize there were so few going into that profession. I know a big problem in my area 10 years ago was the waiting list to get into nursing school.
