What is the relevance of statistics in the nursing profession?

Statistics has relevancy in any field, not just nursing.
Statistics provides a way to observe trends and point out root causes to problems that are occuring and unexplained.

In nursing, statistics could be used to explain the average age
of people effected by a certain dissease.

or

to capture a trend of when the hospital is busiest durring the year, so they know how many nurses to staff each night.

or

to show that the hospital rooms are always occupied in order
to prove that the hospital needs more funding for more rooms.

or

To keep track of individual nurses activities, in order to make sure every nurse is level loaded.

or

the list could go on and on....
