90 meetings in 90 days?

In Alcoholics Anonymous, the "newcomer" is told to start the program by attending 90 meetings in 90 days. My friend started in such a program and only made it to 43 days and then was ambulances to the local hospital and placed in a psychiatric ward on suicide watch. I went to visit him as I was concerned about his welfare and he did'nt even recognize me! As I tried to refresh his memory, he started chanting and screaming many slogans that are common in the AA cult and, though I never knew him to be religious, he said something about Jesus and God save me etc. Then, a nurse came into the room a administered an injection of sort and he calmed. What did Alcoholics Anonymous do to my friend? I am very concerned! Can anyone make a suggestion about how I can help him. He seems to be brainwashed by AA dogma! Can I save him?

No, the doctors are the ones that can save him. Sounds like AA with its religious overtones may not be his cup of tea.

90 meetings in 90 days is brainwashing. Ask many AA members and they won't deny it, but say, "My brain needed a good washing."

This kind of pressure to conform does take a toll, AA has a MORTALITY rate that is four times higher than no treatment at all, at least partly due to suicides. Exact numbers are hard to come by, but most AA members have seen or heard of suicides during their first year.

try attending an al-anon meeting. you might get an understanding of the 12 step program, which is the core of alcoholics anonymous. keep an open mind. you might be surprised.
