Nurse to Physician in the shortest amount of time? Are there any programs for areas that are in need of MD's?

I am open to those programs that are outside the US, however I would prefer to stay in the states. The state doesn't matter, I would be willing to relocate.

First of all, are you a female or a male. That麓s the real deal. This is a good ole boy network, that you are breaking into. 2nd, do you have all the pre-requisites needed to get into medical school including MCAT scores that count. 3rd, are you really willing to relocate, because that is what you will be doing.

I am a nurse of many years, headed back for my MD. It麓s well worth it. But I applied to schools in the USA and they aren麓t fond of women physicians, depends on your age and if you have kids. I speak from a woman麓s point of view. So I upped and relocated to Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. I have been here for 1.5 yrs of the original 4 yrs it was going to take to make the cross over into the USA, through NYMC, Valhalla, NY after finishing here. Count on one extra year, there. There is no short cut programs to becoming a physician, sorry. It麓t the same amount of time for everyone. But is it worth it? Yes, 100%. Tears and all. Because this is one of the hardest things that you will do in your life.

It is not like nursing at all. It麓s better than. You lack a whole lot of info to get there. I sure did. There are various nurses in the program in UAG. Go online, to www.uag.edu out of the san antonio office. they will inform you more. Here, spanish is learned. The first 2 yrs are with US med. school visiting professors. It麓s a riot. But worth it all together. So, look into it. At least in this program, although approved for the Stafford Loan, you can drive back into the USA. No other school has that privilege. So good luck in finding a fast course. One thing, this is one hell of an accelerated program. They throw info at you like crazy but qualify you for the USMLE. Read all about it on different unofficial student sites. valuemd.com, uagmd.com or the worst www.uagmed.com

I'd imagine it'd take about 2 years to fulfill your premed requisites and then 4 years of medical school---depending on whether you will work during the time when you get your prerequisites. (You won't be able to work during medical school; it is just too hard.)

And my own institution (I'm a cardiologist on faculty at a Midwest medical school) has women as 50% (or more) of it's incoming classes. So I am not sure it is an old boys' club. In fact, more women are entering medical school than ever before.

The shortest amount of time will still be 4 years of medical school (providing you have your bachelor's degree already), and then you need to do at least 3 years of residency training.

I don't get what Linda (answered above) said about gender discrimination - that certainly wasn't my experience, and there are more women in medical school now than ever before (40-50% of students are women, depending on the school). I graduated from med school in 1989.

You really want to get into an accredited US medical school if you can. The "Guad Squad", as we call them, are not seen as equals within the medical community. Residency spots will be harder to get, and you will be forever explaining to people why you didn't go to a US school.

There are programs that will pay your way through medical school (such as the US military), but you have to earn your way in like everyone else. If you are a member of a minority group, they will bend over backward to accommodate you. Female does not equal minority, though.

Study hard and kick butt on the MCAT. Apply to the state school where you live now, plus as many other schools as you can. Your nursing experience should be a big plus.

Good luck! It's a long road, but worth it.
