Nurse Practitcioner?

I am thinking about becoming a Nurse Practitcioner and I was wondering if anyone could tell me about how hard it is to get into programs to become nurse practitcioners? Thank you

The programs are very competitive. Usually 1 or 2 years of experience is required, a pretty good g.p.a at least a 3.0, just be in good standing and apply to many programs. The big deal is that there are so many people trying to get into these schools and there are few openings. So just try and be the best of the best and you are bound to get in somewhere. Good luck and I hope I have helped.

First, you'll need a BS in Nursing and an RN license. Then, usually an MS in Nursing and additional clinical training to become an NP.

First, you must spell Nurse Practitioner properly, this is a key factor in any occupation you plan to pursue.

To be an NP you need to get your BSN from a 4 year college or University. Most NP programs prefer for applicants to have experience in nursing prior to starting the course, usually 2 years.

There are Master of Science in Nursing NP programs, and there are now Doctor of Nursing Practice or DNP programs forming. Some DNP programs are in addition to the MSN, others you can enter directly from the BSN program.

There are some NP programs that have an associate degree (RN) to MSN program for RNs who did not attend a BSN program.

Each program will have it's own entrance criteria, but as the number of applicants has increased the admissions level is often above the minimal criteria. Usually the minimal criteria is a 3.0 GPA, but many schools are looking for a 3.5 for admission. You will also need a reasonable GRE or MAT score and recommendations for school.

There is some interest among some NPs to have all NPs get doctorates at some time in the future. If this happens all the MSN programs will probably transition to DNP programs.

Remember there are many types of nurse practitioners, you should try to follow a few to see what each area is like before selecting a program.

Good Luck!
