Is it legal to change a grading policy during the semester.?

My aunt was dismissed from adelphi university nursing program. She had got 2 C's in 2 of her classes. The grade policy was that you can't get nothing lower than a "C+" to pass a class. During the semister they change one of the grading policy to less from earning that C+". If that haven't had happen she would have got that "C+". Is it legal to change a grading policy during a semister. Is it legal to change a grading policy when the semister already started. She had worked hard for 4 years and had 1 semister until graduation. She had alot of family issues that prevented her from putting most of her focus into her last semister. The dean didn't want to see proof of family issues. I think she got discriminated agaisnt when the white dean told her, her "C+" were given to her as a gift. He said " I'm sure your C+ where given to you as gifts from teachers.
leave comments. she have been working hard for these passed 4 years and now dismissed. she needs some help with this question. Thanks

well your aunt does have a case to argue to her professor and or the department chair, and especially her class dean. she can argue that changing the grading policy that is written and basicallly like a contract which is used by students to determine if they want to take the class or not, is unfair. however, as you stated the grading policy was that she had to maintain a C+, and you said she had a C average on 2 exams. a C is below a C+, therefore she violated the grading policy, irregardless of the change. perhaps something you wrote was unclear, but that is how it is looking to me.

I would not want a nurse poking a needle in me who only got a C in anatomy and physiology or any other class for that matter.

"She had got 2 C's in 2 of her classes. The grade policy was that you can't get nothing lower than a "C+" to pass a class."

If she got two Cs, then that is lower than a C+

Nursing school is very strict and hard. Maybe she could transfer to another college?

SO are you saying that one of her teachers decided in the middle of a semester to change the way she was grading things? Like originall tests = 70% of your grade, papers = 15%, attendance = 15%... and all of a sudden she made the tests = 85% and papers = 10% and attendance = 5%.

I think you would have to ask for the school's rules/bilaws concerning changing grading mid-semester. That is a hard one to say and generally professors are required to grade certain things as a certain percentage.

She could go above the dean - board of directors - or whatever if she needs to...but it sounds like she may be SOL on this one. Nursing programs are really ridiculous in their grading and student practices.

On second reading of your question...if she got two C's, then she didn't do well enough to pass the semester. They don't care about personal matters unfortunately. Maybe she could get a doctor to write a letter to help her case, but other than that I think she is done.

I don't even understand what the change was. You're not particularly clear on that. You said that the old policy was that she couldn't get anything lower than a C+ to pass the class, right? And she got a C, so she didn't pass. Right? What changed?

But the real issue is whether or not it's okay for them to change their grading policy in the middle of the semester. It certainly isn't fair, but I don't think it's illegal. But it's not fair.

Can she transfer to another school? It'd be a shame to lose all the work she's done, but I'm not sure that she should go back to Adelphi if they don't want her.

I'm not sure that it is racism. Adelphi is a pretty diverse school. But it does sound like the admin doesn't like your aunt, and thus I'm not sure that Adelphi is a place I'd want her going back to.

So she has some choices. She can further protest her dismissal, of course, and she should - take it up the chain of command, via official means. File the paperwork. And if it doesn't work, she could transfer elsewhere.
