What do I have to do to go to school to be a nurse?

I am a single mother who would like to go to nursing school. I finished high school 9 years ago, and although I got mediocre grades, I cant get accepted into nursing school. Yet why am I always hearing people who say they dropped out of high school went back and got there g.e.d saying that they are in nursing school. At least I finished high school and I still cant get accepted. I cant afford to quit my job right now, but I would love to hear some ideas. No smart *** replies please.

Start with an Associates in nursing. Go to a community college with a nursing program. You'll have to go and talk with a counselor to get specifics. Then if you want, you can transfer your Assoc in nursing to a University so that you can continue on and receive a Bachelors in Science and Nursing.

If you do it this way you can work as nurse while you get your BSN.

This is what my aunt did. Hope this helps.

try to study hard and enter a Nursing school

u gotta apply as a mature student.... state reasons why u would succeed in college.

Where exactly are you trying to go??? Here in Florida, they are hurting for nurses really bad, I can't imagine you'd be turned down unless you have some awful marks against your character, or credit, that make it likely that you would never pay them back.....

Try taking the ACT or some other placement test that the school you wish to attend requires and be sure to include the results with your application. You might score high enough on that placement test to get accepted. Also sending in your high school transcripts couldn't hurt either.

Did you try applying at a technical college? The one I went to has an LPN program. Then, if your grades are good enough, you will probably be able to get into a university if you want to be an RN if that's the route you want to go. I'm satisfied with the training at the technical college I went to.

You need to talk with a counselor at a nursing school who will advise you what steps to take. There is a great demand for nurses. Many people are not aware of it, but some states ,like Virginia, offer scholarships in all fields of nursing.
You do not have to pay them back as long as you agree to work for a certain amount of time ,determined by the amount of money you receive. There are many, many sources out there to help financially,so go for it. Don't wait. Having the desire is the main first step. Not many people have that desire, they just want money. I did it.

Find an accredited LPN or Vocational program.

I was a single mom too...and I am a nurse. Don't be discouraged. First, find out why your not being accepted? They have very specific requirements for nursing school, and will tell you why you are being turned away.
We need good nurses....so dont give up!
I suggest you go to a community college program. First, go to the financial aid department. I am fairly sure that you will qualify for grants and loans. If you are determined enough to finish school no matter what it takes, (it is tough to get through it), then you will do fine, and should accept the loans. These loans are available even if you have very poor credit. They are based on the fact that when your done you will be making good money. Community colleges are used to working with single moms who have a lot on the line when going back to school. Nursing licenses from community colleges are just as good as those from some other hoity toity school, so dont think you are doing something wrong by choosing a community college. Just make sure to ask, "IS THIS AN ACCREDITTED PROGRAM" Very Very Very important. If it isnt accreditted it is worthless to you.
Second, talk to someone in the nursing program, an instructor, an advisor, anyone that can lead you down the correct academic path. You will probably have to enroll in the college and start taking your prerequisite classes so that you can qualify to sign up for the nursing program. Once you get the prereq's out of the way.....then you will be ready for the program.
Even if you need to go to the learning center to buff up math or english or science skills ....do it....many have to do this before they can get into the program.....especially after being out of school for so long.
Dont give up ....keep going to the college making sure you are doing the right classes and are going to be ready for the program. Dont give them an excuse to say no to you.
*** Another tip....find someone who is attending or has attended the program you want to get into and ask for their help. I know going back to college can be very intimidating...but it can also be very exiting....made me feel like a kid again....lol.

Your grades may hurt you but there is always anouther route to take, If you are not accepted to college on the grades you made, think about going to Vo-Tech and getting your LPN first, after that I bet you have an easier time getting accepted into an RN program.
