I have to take a reading comprehension test in order to even try to get into nursing school, any hints b/c I'm

a very poor reader. I do better hands on, and when it comes to testing I panic. When I do read I try and remember every word wondering what the answers are.

that's not the only thing that schools look at when you apply. Don't get stressed out about it. Nursing schools are looking at your total package.

I don't believe there is a magic bullet to performing well on a reading comprehension test other than actually reading more in your day to day activities. The "practice makes perfect adage" comes to mind.

Don't get stressed hun. Know your basic terminology and you'll do fine. Is this a timed test? I don't think it would be. They are looking for a student with good grades and a good package deal. Dont' worry! Talk to your advisor or another nursing student. They are always heppy to help. Good luck hun!

You're being tested on reading for comprehension, not reading for every minute detail. You should practice by investing in a good book for ESL students like Reading Stories for Comprehension Success: Senior High Level, Reading Levels 10-12 by Katherine L. Hall or Reading and Vocabulary Workbook for the Toefl Exam (Academic Test Preparation Series) by Elizabeth Davy and Karen Davy. These books will give you lots of practice reading for comprehension, and helpful tips and advice. These are for higher-level ESL learners, so don't worry that they'll be "too dumb" for you.

REMEMBER TO ALWAYS READ THE QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU READ THE TEXT!

before you take any test, you gotta be confident. if you go in2 it with doubts, statistically youll do worse than if you go in thinkin u got half a chance, know what i mean? so first of all, you need to drop this 'im a poor reader' and say' hey i want this nursing program and i deserve it' and thats all you should be concerned about. you really want this nursing thing, so this test should be the first test youve ever taken...nothing else before this matters...as far as you know, your a 'good reader' and this is your chance to prove it, so stop puttin urself down. so depending on how much time you have before this test, i would consult a local library and see if they have some testing books you can borrow. yeah they actually have these types of books for just this occasion. people that wanna brush up on their reading skills can research and take practice reading tests at the library. and there are online resources as well. just look up sample reading tests, something along those lines. with a couple practice tests, youll be ready to go. and they should also have some study tips for when your trying to remember what you read. when you read a paragraph, you shouldnt try to remember every word, but try to summarize what the entire paragraph is trying to say is a sentence or 2. if they give scratch paper, you can try reading a paragraph and summarizing it on that paper, and then answer the question from what you wrote. its a lot less intimidating going off a couple sentences then feelin like you have to reread an entire paragraph. anyway, im here to help. if you need some tips or whatever, hit me up; i always check my email ;) good luck

I have just finished a reading improvement college class. The book that we used is called " Ten Steps to Improving College Reading Skills by John Langan." I think that you can get this book at a local library.
If you cant find this book my advice is to take your time. Ask if you get take the test on paper and read the questions first, then highlight the important things while reading, and go back after and double or triple check your answers.
