Does anyone know if you can take Xanax's while in Nursing School?

I was recently (two months ago) prescribed this. I have been trying to get into the program for four years and I do not want to lose this opportunity now that I have been accepted. However, I have recently had some family problems and was prescribed this medication. When I went for orientation they said no chemical dependancy will be tolerated, does that count even if it is prescribed?
Thank You in advance,
jadacaden

Although you aren't abusing xanax it is notorious as are all of the sedative hypnotics but xanax in particular, of causing a severe physical dependence. You will know if you are physically dependent if you try to quit and experience any strange or bizarre physical or mental symptoms.
However, it really is going to come down to what their policy is and what they consider a chemical dependence. Like do they mean simply misuse or abuse of a chemical or do they include those who rely on an addictive drug but do not abuse it. Ask them about prescribed controlled drugs and whether it is ok to take them if prescribed to you. You will have to ask them.
Be careful with xanax though. It is a benzodiazepine and if xanax messes you up you won't be able to work.
Read the ashton manual http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/ to learn more about long term use of xanax.
Xanax as a benzodiazepine is only recommended to be used for 2 - 4 weeks by the FDA but many doctors ignor the guidelines though.

there is a huge difference in being dependent on a chemical and taking it for a specified time. Dont abuse it and you'll be fine!

Chemical dependency means using a substance other than which it was prescribed or a substance not prescribed for you. You should talk wiht your doctor as to how long he/she thinks you will be taking this med. if you took it for a specific problem and the problem has lessened see if you can taper off.

Chemical dependency means drug addiction and you should have questioned this during your orientation. It does not extend to prescribed medications, even those that are controlled substances. You Xanax is most likely short-term anyway and won't be an issue. You are not obligated nor required to disclose this information to the school, the program director or the Dean of Nursing.

Hi.
I urge you not to continue on with Xanax as it is one of the most addicting drugs as are all the benzo's.Trying to go off it is hell. The symptoms are worse then what you originally take this horrible drug for.I suggest something less addictive like Valium or Celexa. If you do research on these benzos you will find out horrible they truly are. They should only be used for 2 weeks at the most.
I know that this is not the answer to your question but I felt I had to tell you.
