Any advice for someone thinking about starting nursing school?

Any advice for someone thinking about starting nursing school?

Make sure it's what you really want to do.Maybe talk to a nurse, and see if you can hang out with her/him for the day to see if it's what you really want.I know two people who quit halfway through ,because they changed their minds.Good luck.

Learn to keep your hands warm at all times
i cant tell you how annoying a nurse with cold hands can be

be ready to devote a lot of time to studying medical terms and having weekly tests on them.

also be prepared for a lot of math/chemistry classes.

Well, do it! That is what I did. Currently in nursing classes and good for you!

My daughter is in nursing school right now. My advice is if your not in a relationship, now is not the time to start one. If you have children, make sure you have a support system. If you are in a long term relationship, make sure he supports your decision and realizes that school will take up tons of your time.

Oh yea, if your not good at math, good luck!

I say go for it! I have too weak of a stomach for nursing... That's why I'm physical therapy...
Knowing you, I think you would make a great nurse. It's hard work, and can seem very unrewarding but if you have that dedication then you can do it... Not to mention the pay is phenomenal...

Texas has some awesome nursing schools... Especially where I am at..

LOL...

You will probably have the hots for a doctor, but many nurses do that too as they like the way they operate, you know, a cut above the rest.

Just kidneying you. If I kept on, these puns would get bladder and bladder until you finally told me, "Urine trouble Mister!"

Hope I helped

Kumara!! Are you going into nursing?? That's awesome. You would make an amazing nurse, you are kind, caring and compassionate. You also have a sense of humour which is needed. I had some nurses that made Macbeth look good. You need to have warm hands and a warm stethoscope so that people don't jump out of their skin. Just be the Kumara that we have grown to love and you will be a success. I am so happy for you!! You go girl!! {{{hugs}}}

Do everything by the book, but allow yourself to be creative, in class and in clinicals.
Get those drip equations so down pat, you could solve one in your sleep!
Be ultra friendly with your classmates...your teachers will notice all of that.
Making a mock hospital bed can flunk you from the whole course....so get that DOWN perfect.
Got to school early and practice on things you're not sure about...needle insertion, nose tube placement, ostomy cleaning, etc.
And, never loan out one of your nursing books! Watch them like a hawk.
Bring extra pencils and ink pens, and a sharpener!
Good luck, hon! Oh, and never let another student's 'A' intimidate you!

Talk to someone who knows the whole deal...

Get a strong stomach, yours of course.

Get some experience within the caring role before you apply to university, maybe as a carer in a nursing home, nurses assistant in a hospital, or even voluntary work.

It will give you a taste of whats to come and will be looked on favorably by the admissions board, if you decide nursing is for you.

The drop out rate is pretty high on nursing programs in general, some universities here in the UK report it to be as high as 50% or more.

This is mostly due to financial problems, but some students don't really know what nursing is all about before they apply and how demanding the course really is.

It also helps to be some what financially stable, especially if you have kids, and having a very supportive partner/social network is priceless.

Good luck.

Wear sensible shoes.
