DYSLEXIA help?

I have recently discovered that I am dyslexic. what help will I recieve from my uni? I,m in my 3rd of nurse training.

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, all educational institutions are required provide support to students who request support, this can be in the form of;
Note taking
Tutorial support
American Sign language interpreting (AUSLAN if in Aussie)
Participation (classroom) assistance
Disability support information
Organizing specialized equipment

To access support you will have to see the Disability Liaison Officer, and give them some sort of documentation to verify your disability. They will then discuss the type of support they can give you.

Students may require support due to;
Physical disability
Mental illness
Learning disability
Intellectual disability
Vision impairment
Chronic illness or medical condition
Speech/communication impairment
Hearing impairment/Deafness

I have dyslexia and was not diagnosed until my daughter was, and have returned to study. I approached the Disability liaison officer who helped set up support in the form of a note taker, and a tutor. I also disclosed to the teachers of my dyslexia so they can help if needed, also they will not be overly concerned with my mixing up some words, as I often do.

A few tips that may help;
Ask for any notes to be printed on a coloured paper, I find a buff or cream coloured paper reduces glare.
When copying notes from the board, ask the teacher to write each paragraph in different colour so you can keep up with notes (this is if you don't have a note taker)
Dragon Naturally Speaking is an excellent computer program which does word processing, and uses speech recognition, that allows you to dictate your work. (My daughter used this program and is hooked).
Where possible tape lectures or class discussions.
Use a computer in class for note taking, most universities will loan out a lap top, if you don't have one.

I have included a few links for you, the last two have a back ground colour which you can customize to suit you, and this may help you work out what colour class handouts to be printed on.

Hope this helps a little.

Your uni doesn't care. It's up to you to get the help you need. Find tutors or whatever. You can speak to your individual professors and see if they will adjust exams a bit. But that's not fair to the rest of the students. Also, the real world won't adjust itself to fit your needs either. Harsh, but there it is.

well apart from receive - you spelt everything right - so at least you don't seem to have it really bad - ask your tutor or whatever - but i think they just give you more allowances for misspelling in exams etc

Typically, you would have had to been diagnosed in elementary or high school to get any benefit from the university level. When diagnosed early on, you would have been given an IEP documenting that you need support. However, since you made it through school and into a university all withOUT support, you may have a tough time pleading your case.

Do you have school reports or documentation showing that you struggled throughout school?

Head to your "Disabilities services center" at your university, they can help you understand what you may or may not receive.

they can provide notetakers for you, i know that for sure my sister has it
it depends on the universty, but they have to provide services if you request them. if they dont have then you have the perfect chance to sue.
