Anyone in the medical field (hospital or Skilled Nursing Facility)?

ok...I'm in training.
We "lost" a pt. today...My first experience w/this(I know it happens).
Does that feeling of __?__(I don't know what to call it...sadness,helpless maybe) go away?
How did you get thru it?

First don't use euphemisms for death. For a minute I thought you had misplaced your patient.
While it is very disconcerting when people die under your care, If you did everything you could, that is the best you can do. How to get through it? I think we all have to find our own way, and it's OK to be sad about it, you just can't dwell on it. Think about all the people you helped, enjoy your friends and family and realize just how precious life and your relationships are..

If you "lose" a patient, you need to go find him. If one dies, you need to say so. This is not as small a point as it sounds. Euphemisms are a means of avoiding reality. Cope directly through mourning, and get used to the idea. It hasn't gotten any better so far for me, though I've only been practicing for thirty years.
