For all you nurses out there! How do i know nursing is for me?

I have a great passion for this, and am currently waiting to do my first shadow on the wards as a "Health Care Assistant" before starting my training while at work! It's something I have always wanted to do, and know when ever I walk into a hospital its where i want to be. Could this still be a childhood dream and do you think i might change my mind when it hits reality?

WOW! Well first of all, I am glad you are asking yourself this question. I am a nurse, I have been a nurse since (yikes I am OLD!) 1982. I went into nursing for all the wrong reasons, much of which was pressure by my parents to pick a profession that had some income potential. I got a degree at the same time as I was training for nursing (BSN), which was GREAT. I did end up getting a law degree, but went back to nursing after a few years as a lawyer.

You sound like someone who has a great passion to heal and I imagine you will be a really wonderful nurse. I was never interested in nursing until I actually DID it. You will know a lot when you first start and actually start doing stuff with patients. Do not be surprsied if you are a little put off by the 'ickiness factor', this is normal and sometimes it takes a little getting used to. Don't be discouraged to find that you don't instantly form a bond with all of you patients(or any of them for that matter) and the best piece of advice I can give you is, treat everyone as if they were a loved family member. People who are ill can be under a lot of stress and they can be cranky, so put a smile on your face NO MATTER WHAT. Know your stuff, study all you can and be kind and you will be GREAT ! Good luck!

would you mind if you tell me where your workplace is? Report It

If you like helping sick people or injured people. Compassion and patience are some prerequisites before beginning your training. And yes there will be cleaning up bad smelling bodily fluids.

I've been an HCA for many years & had an interview at uni yesterday to become a trained nurse. Like you it's something I've wanted to do for a long time but family commitments have delayed my training. Working as an HCA will give you a good insight as to whether or not nursing is for you. I love my job, yes I do wipe lots of bums but there is so much more to it than that. It's a cliche but it's a very rewarding job. If you're passionate then chances are it is for you. Good luck with working as an HCA & I hope you do find it is for you.

I've enclosed a link to a student nurse website which is fab. It's for people who are training or want to train. It's very informative & there's loads of support on there. 鈽?/div>

You will have to try and see for yourself.
Have you ever watched someone die? And tried to think of it as just part of the job?
It really isn't easy for anyone. Those who stick with it all have different ways and time periods to deal with that.
Then how about the pay, the shifts, the lack of holidays, lack of social life?
The bad air in the hospitals that dry out your hair and skin and expose you to all kinds of bugs?

Am I trying to put you off? Certainly not. I burst your bubble only to help you ... If you can look at all this realistically and still feel you can do it, you are a wonderful person!
We need more like you!

Of course, there is a positive, up-side too, but you need to cope with the down side first!
Good luck to you! The world can always use more nurses!

If you like to wipe bums, you will love it.
