Should i look after my mum (80 yrs old) so her house won't be taken by nursing home?

my mum lives 3 hours away from me, she is getting less mobile since last year, if she goes to a nursing home they will take her house, then i won't have much inheritance, should i look after her long distance? train and 2 buses each way. I also have a brother but he has nothing to do with her.

the nursing home will only take what she owe's them so there may be money left over.

she could alternatively pay for a home careworker using money from an equity release scheme.

I had my mom living with me it was great she died in2004,we did everything together. My brother visit her only once a year

Is there anyway you can get "power of attourney" or whatever? I suggest you see a lawyer as you should be able to retain your mother's estate in the event of her death unless the rights of the house were turned over to the nursing home in the contract for her care.

well is that all you are worried about is your inheritence if so then yes by all means save the house but if you really care then i would do whatever i could to spend time with her while she is still around sometimes that could be better than an inheritance

move closer to her or hire someone to take care of her for pete sake she's ur mom, i would look after my mom no matter wot.

WOULD A MOVE BE OUT OF THE QUESTION?EITHER YOU MOVE TO HER OR MOVE HER TO YOU.YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY ONE MOM CAN TAKE CARE OF IN YOUR CASE 2 KIDS BUT,2 KIDS CAN'T TAKE CARE OF ONE MOM.REALLY,I WOULD DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO BE ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF MY MOM,ONE DAY YOU'LL WISH YOU HAD OF.

you should take care of her because you love her not because you will get her house she is your mom!!

The long distance thing isn't going to work, you'll be a complete nutcase in no time. You need to either move her in with you or let them take the house.

It sounds to me your motive isnt pure your main concern is wat u will gain out of it.Its a big responsibility to care for the elderly.

Get power of Attorney and get your mom to sign the house over to your name and if you cannot take care of her long distance then put her in a reliable nursing home closest to your home and visit her everyday and spend precious time with her because that will be a memory you will cherish with till her dying days. When my sister had mom put in a nursing because she could no longer be a 24 hour nurse mom needed. Our mom did not own her own home at the time but she put her in a nursing home near her. My sister and us bonded with mom like never before and had some awesome moments and time with her and enjoyed her till The Lord took her home.

Whow!!!! You sound more troubled by no inheritance than looking after your Mother. Does not matter if bro. has anything to do with her--you do obviously. Take the train or better still why not sell the home house- take the money and build on to your home for her space. Easy solution- plus you gain equity in your house and then Mom is right there for you to look out after. No more trains or traveling.

Move her to your house that way you can keep an eye on her and you could like someone else said sell her house and put an addition on your house so shes 3 minutes away instead of 3 hours away. Its going to kill you in no time if you keep going back and forth. And that's your mom the person who raised you for 20 years don't you think that you owe her that at least that.
