What do they call someone that is training to become a nurse or doctor,or are they just called a student?

In the US, medical students are called just that - medical students. When writing notes on a chart, they usually denote their status by writing "MS III" or "MS IV" (third or fourth year medical students, respectively)

Nurses have the designation of nursing students, graduate nurses (not yet passed nursing boards) and registered nurses.

(Interns are MD's who have graduated from medical school and are in their first year of residency)

Nurses (in the UK) are called student nurses

medical student and nursing student for the respective professions.

student nurse is in fact an offence in Australia (because nurse is still in the title) and the fine is up to $40,000.

the reason is in an emergency there should be no confusion that someone is a student - student nurse could be misheard as .... nurse. secondly giving out advice and treatment patients can misinterpret and believe someone is more qualified then they are.
