I HAVE to take up opportunities when they arise in my nurse training....?

but i tend to worry what other people (other proffesionals) think of me - i am aware that as my confidence grows then this will change but at the start how can i help myself overcome this?

I remember my first day on the ward as a staff nurse. I felt so nervous! Until then i had always tried to do my best and done OK but all of a sudden ... My registration that i had worked so hard to get was on the balance (Should i make a mistake).

I made a point of double checking everything! From reading Kardex to dishing out medications, writing notes etc. It took me a few weeks before my charge nurse asked me how i thought i was getting on. I told him i felt a little nervous still and liked to double check all i did fearing he might think me silly or not settling in quick enough. he asked me if i felt i knew everything. I told him my registration and staff nurse title simply meant the same as passing the driving test. I was deemed able to work on the ward if i still had so much to learn, would always have to learn before nursing is continuous education. He told me he was very happy with my answer. Would have hated me to feel i was so good as too many did and continue as i was doing, and indeed double checking was the best way. My confidence developed but i still double checked and it saved me from making mistakes.

So to overcome lack of confidence, just take it easy. Listen to those who have been on the ward for a while, they know their patients and needs better than anyone else and double check what you do yourself. better that than rush to do things quickly and make the one stupid mistake that might cost you your registration.

And don't forget NMC code of conduct either! If you feel unsure about any procedure, not up to doing what is asked of you it is your duty to let your charge nurse know so she can pass on task to someone who can do it and may be arrange for you to watch how it is done and learn under supervision.

Since you are in training, your primary objective is to advance your nursing skills. If this is made clear to your coworkers, then they will admire your motive.

consentrate on what you are doing don't think about what they think remember your training and do what you have to.
remember they all had to train and know they felt the same at one point

never forget..."they were at where you are at some point" at the moment...don't let them intimidate you...it's no different to learning to drive,,,they have all been there...it's a shame they forget the fact, just concentrate on what you want to acheive with a pasion to want to do your best and you CAN'T go wrong.... my best wishes are with you, all will be ok
